Lamar State College-Port Arthur students had a trashy job Saturday — and loved every minute of it.

The college students, along with staff and faculty members, participated in an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup along U.S. 69 from 39th Street to Gulfway Drive.

“This is our stretch of highway and it feels important to give back to the community because they’ve given so much to us,” Cody Underwood, Student Government Association president, said.

William Young, SGA vice president, said the cleanup efforts are good for the community and are a way to bring awareness to motorists and remind them not to litter.

Roxanne Gray, student activities director, polled the students near her to see what odd pieces of trash they had picked up.

“A pair of ballet slippers, some panties, a dollar bill, but mostly plastic and Styrofoam, beer bottles and cans,” she said.

The bright orange vest clad group used the parking lot of Memorial Baptist Church as base for its operations and began work at 9 a.m. The college has adopted this particular stretch of highway and has bi-annual cleanups, once in the spring and again in the fall. The group also does its part to keep Texas beaches clean twice a year during the Texas Adopt-a-Beach events.
