BRIDGE CITY — Talk about your role reversal.

The Bridge City Cardinals will roll into Lumberton tonight to face the Raiders and show off their new, spread offense.

The spread is an offense the Raiders ditched to go for a more power running game, which is what the Cardinals (0-1) ran for many years until Cris Stump took over in Bridge City.

Not only have the offenses swapped, the rosters seem to have patterned around each other.

Bridge City is sporting just one starter back from last year after graduating a heavy senior class. Lumberton (1-0) is stacked with experience and are looking to make some noise in District 22-4A.

“Lumberton seems to be the exact opposite of us,” Stump said. “They have tons of experience and won by a big score a week ago. They should be pumped up Friday and have the right to be. They will be ready for us.”

To say the Raiders are stacked might actually be an understatement.

Lumberton has 26 returning lettermen and 18 starters back from last year’s 4-6 squad.

Leading the way is quarterback Bryce DeJohn who completed 111-of-207 passes for 1,538 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Raiders also bring back three targets for DeJohn with receivers Aaron Credeur and Travis Wilkerson and tight end Cody Evans.

The running game is led by senior Cody Hussey who rushed for 786 yards and six scores while Jacob Hanna is also back to help the Raiders move the ball.

Bridge City’s offense is still adapting to the new style Stump he brought over from being offensive coordinator at Beaumont West Brook.

It did not take long for Stump to show the Cardinals will pass first and ask questions later in their 28-25 loss to Liberty.

Junior quarterback Dustin Breaux was 14-0f-35 passing for 197 yards and a touchdown with Luke Rhodes being the top receiver with eight catches for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Breaux also rushed for 98 yards and added three scores on the ground.

“The No. 1 thing this week is we know what to expect a little better this week,” Stump said. “We can see how the game goes and how the game moves on a Friday night. If we execute our offense we will be fine. We just have to cut down on our mistakes.

“Our turnovers in the first game were all mental. I really think we are capable of pulling this one out. We are a little more ready to play. We are getting there and we are still a young team with one game under our belt.”
