NHS girls dominate Orange tennis meet

ORANGE — Nederland dominated the top prizes in the girls division on Friday, winning three of the four main draws at the Orange Invitational tennis championships.
Coach Jorge Lopez’s girls won the A singles (Jessica Phelps), B singles (Shelby Hanson) and A doubles (Jaclyn Sandoval and Cynthia Sandino) divisions while the Bulldogs went to the event without their top two boys players.
Phelps beat West Brook’s Reagan Hollier 6-4, 7-5 in the A singles finals. Hanson downed Bridge City’s Lacie Ener, 6-1, 6-4 for the B singles title. Sandoval and Sandino defeated Erin Kelley and Katy Talbot of Orangefield in the A doubles bracket, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
The Sabine Pass team of Jinna Lewis and Candace Teller topped the Buna team of Anikka Blank and Kristin Hickerson 6-1, 6-4 for the B doubles crown.
Matt Minick of Hardin-Jefferson won his season’s first tournament in A boys singles, defeating Jude Lane of LC-M, 6-4, 6-0. Brent Pham of Port Neches-Groves topped Hunter Gothia of Bridge City in the championship match of the B boys singles.
Warren’s team of Scott Carnley and Tyler Word defeated the Nederland duo of James Morua and Rushi Sukhavasi for the A boys doubles title and the Nederland tandem of Spencer Cole and Adam Weaver claimed the B boys doubles final over Trey Batchan and John Fuller of West Orange-Stark.
Most of the area’s schools will participate next weekend at the Ozen Invitational in Beaumont.
