FRIENDSWOOD — A trip to the 4A state team tennis championships looks unlikely but Nederland has a decent chance to rank among the top three schools at this week’s regional meet.

The District 22-4A round-robin champion Nederland (7-2 and 6-0) as well as runnerup Little Cypress-Mauriceville (5-1) head to the Galveston County area Friday and Saturday with Montgomery and host Friendswood considered to be the heavy favorites in the team competition.

Only the regional winner advances to next weekend’s state tournament in Austin.

“I think we have a chance to get seeded third or fourth,” said Nederland tennis coach Jorge Lopez.

The Nederland tennis players will travel today and the tournament draw will occur tonight at 7 p.m.

Nederland’s boys singles players will be junior Jimmy Hoang (8-1), senior Rushi Sukhavasi (8-1), junior Ben Wiedenfeld (7-2), junior Nick Duplant (7-2), sophomore Aaron Elizondo (6-3) and sophomore Cody Mays (7-2). The team of Hoang and Sukhavasi are 7-0 and lead the three boys doubles teams. James Morua plays on the same duo with Wiedenfeld and the third boys doubles pair consists of Duplant and Elizondo. Mays plays on Nederland’s mixed doubles team with sophomore Rachel Binagia.

Five seniors dominate Lopez’s lineup of six girls singles players. They start with West Brook transfer Jessica Phelps (7-2), Cynthia Elizondo (7-2), Shelby Hanson (7-2), Jaclyn Sandoval (7-2) and Julia Tran (7-2) along with No. 6 singles player Binagia (7-2). The Nederland girls doubles teams at regionals are scheduled to be Phelps and Sandoval (7-2), Sandino and Hanson (6-0) and the all-Tran team of Julia and Xuan Tran.
