The Babe Ruth baseball leagues are calling their shots this weekend, kicking off the East Texas state tournament in three age groups.
All the games in all of these groups will be played at Metreyeon Delahoussaye Field. The 15-year-old group will start today at 9 a.m. when West Brazos plays Bay City. The Nederland group will play the winner of that game at 7 p.m. today.
The other two teams in the 15-year old grouping are Brazoswood and Wharton, who will play at 11:30 a.m. today. The 15-and-under group is a bracketed tournament with double elimination.
Both the 16-year-old and 18-year-old groups will play a best-of-three with Wharton, also at Nederland’s home field. The 16-and-under game will be today at 2 o’clock while the 18-and-under game will follow today at 4:30 p.m. All three groups will play additional games on Saturday and Sunday.
The winners of each group will move on to the Southwest regional before possibly winning a berth in the Babe Ruth World Series.
The unique thing about Babe Ruth baseball is there is very little cost to the players, comparatively, for these tournaments. Each player pays $80 when they join the league, but do not have to pay housing costs at the tournament sites.
For that, the community helps. Each player is placed with a host family, who may each have two or three players from the teams together. While that team is at the tournament, the host family will feed them and generally make them feel at home here in Mid-County.
If any of these teams make it to the World Series, Babe Ruth baseball will fly them to the host location.
Mid-County is no stranger to that World Series, either, having won three titles in the league’s 50-year history here.
That includes two 13-year old titles and a 16-year-old title in 2002. It won’t be easy to get back, however, as Brazoswood won the Class 5A baseball championship this season and both La Grange and Shiner are perennial baseball powers who feed into the region’s teams.
The 18-year-old team also features quite a bit of power from a Nederland team that made the area round of the playoffs. Dillon Duplant, Coby Richard, Nick Cardenas, Stephen Schlett, Dylan Campbell, Jake Richard, Andrew Williamson, Jacob Pitts and Kanton Richard are all from that Nederland team.
Bridge City’s Hayden Guidry is also there from the Cardinals’ Class 3A regional semifinalist team.
