Update: Shooting victim described as quiet, easygoing

NEDERLAND — Hillcrest Apartments in Nederland has returned to its generally quiet atmosphere one day after Hollie Arredondo was shot to death and her son Joseph Garrett Arredondo arrested.

David Tran, manager at Nederland Hillcrest Apartments, 1516 South 27th St., has an open door policy and remembered speaking with Hollie Arredondo on occasions. He called her “easygoing and quiet, not the type of person to bother anyone.”

Tran was out running errands on Wednesday when, at about 5 p.m., police arrived at the apartment complex and discovered the 55-year-old woman dead and her 26-year-old son outside the apartment with a pistol.

“When she came into the office she was very respectful, said yes sir and no sir,” Tran said. “She paid her rent on time and was by herself most of the time.”

The News called several of the victim’s friends and a family member but no one wanted to go on the record to talk about Hollie or her son.

Police were first alerted to the domestic disturbance at 5:09 p.m. April 10 when the local Spindletop Center (formerly Spindletop MHMR) called Nederland’s dispatch.

Police were initially given the incorrect address by Spindletop, he said. Dispatch then cross-referenced the names and found the correct address.

Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush said Hollie was on the phone with Spindletop and was reportedly telling them of a problem when the door to the apartment was kicked in and shots were fired.

“There was no indicated she (Hollie) was trying to get him (Joseph Arredondo) into there,” Bush said.

The police chief said he doesn’t know why the victim chose to call Spindletop instead of the police.

A total of seven shots were fired in the apartment, six of them striking the victim.

Joseph Garrett Arredondo is charged with capital murder and is being held on a $2 million bond.

Homicides in the city of Nederland are fairly rare. In 2008, Dennis James Sattler shot and killed his estranged wife, Susan Sattler, at her Nederland home. There were no homicides from 2009-2011. Then in 2012 there were two homicides; Kurt Ray Kasper reportedly stabbed Timothy James Melancon to death then Travis Wade Smith fatally shot Holly Crenshaw, the mother of his child.

The police did not have any information regarding funeral services for Hollie Arredondo.

Perhaps atoning for past sins, Hollywood named the brutal, unshrinking historical drama “12 Years a Slave” best picture at the 86th annual Academy Awards.
Steve McQueen’s slavery odyssey, based on Solomon Northup’s 1853 memoir, has been hailed as a landmark corrective to the movie industry’s virtual blindness to slavery, instead creating whiter tales like 1940 best-picture winner “Gone With the Wind.” “12 Years a Slave” is the first best-picture winner directed by a black filmmaker.

Although the bill passed the next month during a special session called by Gov.
