FREEPORT, Texas (AP) — Three men whose catamaran was disabled by a squall were rescued Wednesday evening as another storm approached.
The boat was on its way from Boca Raton, Fla., to Rockport when the first storm hit Wednesday morning, breaking the mast and leaving the men stranded almost 40 miles east of Freeport, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The crew tried to use the engine to get to shore but ran out of fuel on the way.
A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the men from the 32-foot boat about 6:30 p.m. as another storm approached.
Paul Vercellone, 55, of Rockport, who is the captain and owner of the catamaran, along with Ed Bright, 54, of Pensacola, Fla., and Mark Landcaster, 50, of Point Washington, Fla., were taken to an air station in Houston.
Vercellone was about 80 miles from his destination and more than 1,100 miles into his journey. He had picked up the other two along the way.
The catamaran was a 1990 Endeavor Intercat 1500.
Freeport is about 45 miles southwest of Galveston.
