TEXAS TODAY: News from across the state Associated PressWillacy County DA seeks to have investigation stopped
RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) — The Willacy County district attorney on Thursday filed an injunction to stop a state district judge from hearing cases on his docket. District Attorney Juan Guerra filed the request against 197th state District Court Judge Migdalia Lopez, claiming she has “such a high degree of antagonism against the district attorney that it is most difficult to make a fair judgment possible.” Lopez recently launched an investigation into allegations that Guerra had rigged cases in exchange for money from defendants. Lopez appointed Cameron County Justice of the Peace Gustavo Garza — one of Guerra’s former political rivals — to head up the investigation. Guerra denies any wrongdoing and said he believes the inquiry stems from his own investigation into a bribery scheme involving federal prison contracts in Willacy County.
