Area golf notepad: Jarrod Brown helps MHB wins ASC championship

PORT ARTHUR — CHIP SHOTS: Jarrod Brown, an integral part of the PN-G team that went to state last year, helped Mary Hardin Baylor win the American Southwest Conference championship recently at Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose. Brown, in an event played in harsh weather conditions, shot rounds of 78-77-77 for a 54-hole total of 233 that was 12th overall. Brown, who posted a 4.0 grade average in his first college semester, is the only freshman on a team that includes three seniors and a junior. By winning the ASC title, Mary Hardin-Baylor advance to the NCAA Division III championships Glen Rose . . .  PN-G’s Braden Bailey tuned up for next week’s 4A state tournament by placing 40th out of 90 players in a loaded national and international field in the AJGA Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions Club in Texas A&M. Coming off the disappointment of seeing Huntsville’s Chandler Phillips snatch away the Region III, 4A championship on the final hole last Wednesday, Bailey shot rounds of 78-77-77 for a 54-hole score of 232. Austin’s Cooper Dossey, one of the players the PN-G junior will be trying to beat for the 4A state title next Monday and Tuesday at the University of Texas Golf Club, won with a 211. Bailey, after finishing 7th in state last year, will have his work cut out in a loaded 4A field. In addition to Dossey, defending champ Scottie Scheffler of Dallas Highland Park, the current U.S. Amateur champ, will be looking to repeat. Also competing will be Huntsville’s Phillips, who is coming off his third consecutive regional championship . . . No aces reported from this past week but two golfers at Babe Zaharias did hole shots from a significant distance on 4-par holes. Mike Johnson of Bridge City sank a 7-iron from 160-yards on the 18th for an eagle 2. The shot was witnessed by Kirk Roccaforte and Andy Meshwert. A day later Bernie Johnson of Nederland knocked in his second from 130-yards on the par 4 11th. The shot was witnessed by Orland Defrates . . . Calvin Anderson was the individual winner of the Dukes Easter Invitational at Belle Oaks with a 76 and was also a member of the winning best ball team that included Griffen Patterson, Elias Valderas and Lee Poulter. They combined for a 70. Second at 77 was the team of Brigg Patterson, Richard Morealle, Rowdy Eastwood and Kevin Andrepont. Placing third at 78 was the foursome of Jessie Davila, Oscar Carillo, Rufus Reyes and Rob Perez . . . The team of Tom Lawton, Harrell Guidry, Bob Moore and Robert Lynch won the Babe Zaharias DogFight with 18 points. Tied for second with 17 points was the team of Raymond Darbonne, Rodney Christman, Don Duplan and Paul Bourgeois and the foursome of Gary Whitfill, Bill Draughon, Steve Wisenbaker and Allen Suire. Closest to the hole winners were Robert Bonin (No. 2), Darbonne (No. 7), Mark Petry (No. 12) and Roger Koch (No. 15) . . . The Senior 50 Plus Game at Babe Zaharias was played in a 2 ball format, with the team of Danny Peddy, Cecil Norris, Roger Koch and Marc Petry winning the front in minus 6. On the back, the foursome of Adam Noel, Dillard Darbonne, Billy Thillet and Gene Hardy won with minus 3 . . . The Super Saturday Game at The Babe was played in a 2 ball format. On the front the team of Dwain Anderson, Ron Sciarrilla, Jeff Huffman and C. Jordan won with minus 5. There was a three-way tie for second. The back was also won in minus 5 by the team of Adam Noel, Duane Sibley, Don Duplan and Andrew Sigur. Taking second at minus 4 was the Dwain Anderson team. . . Points was the format for the Senior Game at The Babe. Taking first place with 12 points was the team of Gary Fontenot, Ron Theriot, Bob Moore and Pete Reobroi. Second with 11 points was the foursome of Bill Fears, Joe Cormier, Joe Benoit and Stedman Tahaney. Closest to the pin winners were Mike Lansford (No. 2) and Cormier (No. 12) . . . There was a three-way tie for first in the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Bill Taylor, Rufus Mier and Jim Brown all finished plus 3. David Vorpahl won closest to the pin on No. 15.
