West golf notepad: Black, Dodds miss out on Champions Tour cards

PORT ARTHUR — Over-par opening rounds cost former Lamar golfers Ronnie Black and Trevor Dodds in their bids to secure playing cards on the 2014 Champions Tour. Black, after opening with a two-over 73, came back with rounds of 66-68-69, but his 72-hole total of 276 missed by four shots. Dodds, followed a first-day 74 with 67-66-68 for a 277, which missed by five. Wes Short Jr., posted the low score of 266 on the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale . . .  Lonnie LaBove, who was a major factor in the PN-G golf team reaching the 4A state tournament last spring, picked up his first check in seven pro starts last weekend in the San Antonio Open. LaBove, with a three-over par 75, finished T5 in an event shorted from 36 holes to 18 due to rain. Encouraged to play in San Antonio by Dennis Walsh, LaBove pocketed $660 . . . PN-G’s Braden Bailey, though he came up short in all three of his matches, was part of the winning South Team in the Legends Junior Tour’s Jackie Burke Cup in College Station. Playing in raw, rainy conditions last weekend, Bailey and Scott Williams of Cedar Park lost 3-and-2 in fourball matches and 1 up in alternate shot. Bailey was defeated 5-and-3 by Brandon Smith of Frisco in singles play . . .  D.A. Points, who won last year’s Shell Houston Open thanks in no small part to putting lessons from Lamar University golf coach Brian White, will have the distinction of being the last SHO champion at Redstone Golf Club. No, the tournament is not moving to another location. Escalante Golf, purchased all of Redstone’s Golf Properties this past summer, has opted for a name change. The new course name will be revealed at a media outing on Friday, Dec. 6 . . .  The City of Port Arthur has announced that Aquila Golf, which has operated Babe Zaharias Golf Club for the past 20 years, has been extended for five more years. Aquila officials plan to meet with the city’s golf committee in the near future to discuss course improvements . . . The team of Darrell Dugas, Andrew Sigur, Bill Hernandez and Steve Childree finished with 19 points to win the Babe Zaharias DogFight. Second with 18 points was the team of Rick Pritchett, Gene Noble, Don Duplan and Ron Overstreet. Closest to the pin winners were Ray Trahan (No. 2), Roger Koch (No. 7), Mark Petry (No. 12) and Andrew Sigur (No. 15) . . . The Bayou Din DogFight was won with 15 points by the team of Kenneth Belaire, Bill Hanley, Jimmy Smith and  Don Smith. Second with 13 points was the team of Steve Picou, David English, Alan Louviere and Don Smith. Closest to the pin winners were Craig Fontenot (No. 2), Belaire (No. 7), Butch Cross (No. 11) and Hanley (No. 17). Shot of the day was authored by Charles McNeil of Nederland. McNeil holed a sand wedge from 80 yards for an eagle 3 on the 13th hole on the Bayou Back . . . The Senior Game at The Babe was played in a best 3-ball format. Winning the front nine at plus 2 was the team of Harry Green, Bob Barnes, Joe Cormier, Joe Benoit and Dwayne Morrison. On the back there was a three-way tie at plus 8 between the Green team, the foursome of Larry Johnson, Ed Hetzel, Larry Rogers and Paul Brown and the team of Bill Hanley, Bill Fears, Charlie Huckaby and Paul Bourgeois. Closest to the pin winners were Joe Cormier (No. 2), Rick Pritchett (No. 7), Hetzel (No. 12) and Tommy Prejean (No. 15) . . .
