Beaumont golfer collects ninth career hole-in-one

PORT ARTHUR — A hole-in-one is not a shot which can be taught but Beaumonter Nader Bood is perhaps one of the more qualified persons to teach golfers how it’s done. Witnessed by George Shumaker and Wayne Cergnillia at Bayou Din Golf Club last Friday, the hole-in-one specialist did it again. Bood knocked in a 7 iron at the 120-yard 11th hole. It marked Bood’s ninth career hole in one and only his first one since May 20 of this year. Nader’s last ace had been recorded at Bayou Din’s second hole on May 20... A pair of Lumberton guys took the top honors on Monday at Beaumont Country Club when the Southern Texas PGA junior tour made its summer visit to the northeast corner of Beaumont. Garrett James won the 16-18 division by four strokes, shooting nines of 33 and 38 for a 71. Bryce Shaver of Lumberton was the two-shot winner in the boys 13-15 division with a round of 79. Mid-County golfers placed second in both categories — Jarrod Brown of Groves (74) in the older group and Michael Krautz of Nederland (81) in the 13-15s. Mid-County would not be denied in the girls 13-15 scoreboard, though, as Karlei Hemler of Groves fired an 87 to capture her category by three shots.... When the Little Linksters convened on Tuesday at Bayou Din, Kai Parkhurst of Orange led the way with a 62 in the 13-15 division.... A pair of famous area golf names dotted the scorecards in the 10-12 boys group — Burke and Lietzke. Little Jackie Burke had the unique distinction of being the lone double winner already this week. Burke fired a nine-hole score of 43 Monday at Beaumont Country Club and a 39 Tuesday at Bayou Din.... Ron Somerville and Barry Jackson tied for first place last Friday in the weekly seniors game at Belle Oaks. Somerville and Jackson each had two points while Doc Brown had one. Tom McFerrin won the closest to the hole honors at Belle Oaks’ eighth hole... Before we move on to Babe Zaharias, here’s a personal tip of our cap to Ed Campbell, echoing the area’s sentiments for his outstanding efforts. Ed’s influence throughout our area’s golf community simply speaks for itself. The Babe featured a hot-shooting quartet of Adam Noel, Don MacNeil, Harry Green, and Art Miller with a winning front-nine 6-under-par at the weekly Super Saturday Game. First place on the back nine belonged to the foursome of Bill Hammond, Gene Rountree, Cap Hollier and Rod Bennett at 3-under-par. Last Thursday’s Senior Game at The Babe produced a clear-cut winning team on the front nine of Cap Hollier, Ron Theriot, Mark Petry, and Ben Thornton by three strokes at 20 under par. Don MacNeil, Paul Bourgeois, Jack Wilson and Robert Lynch followed at 17-under. The back nine champs were Larry Johnson, Charlie Huckaby, Larry Rogers and Carl Hudman at 12-under followed by Ray Darbonne, Bill Jones, Bob Byerly and Stedman Tahaney at 11-under. Closest to the pin marksmen were Earl Richard (2nd), Jim Jordan (7th), Cap Hollier (12th) and L.J. Hardy (15th). Last Wednesday’s Dog Fight winning team was Earl Richard, Butch Landry and Don MacNeil with 21 points followed by a squad of Daniel Thompkins, Paul Allemand, Bill Fears and Charlie Huckaby in second with 20. The closest to the hole honorees were Clay Lewis (No. 2), Cody Metts (No. 7), Larry Rogers (on both No. 12 and No. 15).
