Former Lamar golfer Shawn Stefani is headed to next week’s U.S. Open at Merion after tying for second Monday in the sectional qualifier at Colonial Country Club in Memphis. At a site where nine Open spots were up for grabs among 112 players, Stefani shot rounds of 68-66 for a 134 total that was one shot off the pace of medalist Kevin Sutherland. For the Barbers Hill ex, it will be his second trip to the U.S. Open. He also qualified for the 2009 event at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. Stefani, in his first year on the PGA Tour, is No. 144 on the money list with earnings of $254,701 . . . Stefani’s former LU teammate, Chris Stroud, didn’t fare as well in his U.S. Open qualifier. Stroud shot rounds of 69-72 — 141 at Brookside Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, to finish 42nd in a field of 120 players. With 15 Open spots up for grabs, it took a 136 to qualify. PGA Tour regular Charley Hoffman, who was coming off a final round 81 in Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Classic, was the medallist at 133. Stroud, who continues to have issues with his driver, shot a closing 78 at the Memorial and wound up tying for 53rd. A check of $14,353 boosted his 2013 winnings to $700,784. His next tournament is the June 20-23 Travelers Championship in Cromwell, CT . . . Gary “Bones” Richardson, who works at Bayou Din, scored a hole in one on the 161-yard, 2nd on the Bayou Front with a 6-iron. The shot was witnessed by Mark Lee, Butch Strange and Hoot Gibson . . . The team of Tony Trevino, Alex Espinosa, Paul Duplantis and Gene Noble finished minus 3 in a 2 ball format to win the front nine in the Monday Babe 50 Seniors Plus game. There was a two-way tie at minus 4 on the back between the team of Roddy Weatherly, Roger Koch, Ed Hetzel and John Fong and the foursome of Gerald Huebel, Ron Theriot, Russ Gloede and Bud Auffurth . . . The team of Tony Borel, Doug English, Charles Huckaby and Paul Brown won the Babe Zaharias DogFight with 20 points. Second with 18 points was the team of Jim Jordan, Troy Sedatole, Bill Fears and Roger Koch. Closest to the pin winners were Guy Barker (No. 2), David English (No. 7), Mark Petry (No. 12) and Koch (No. 15) . . . The Senior Game at The Babe was played in a 4 person scramble format. Winning with a 59 was the team of Larry Padia, Joe Vanderweg, Gary Anderson and Ben Thornton. Second at 60 was the foursome of Raymond Darbonne, Cap Hollier, Joe Benoit and Ted Estes. Closest to the pin winners were Mariano Nassar (No. 2) Don MacNeil (No. 7), Stedman Tahaney (No. 12) and Larry Padia (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at The Babe was played in a 2-ball format. Taking the front in minus 4 was the team of Bill Hammond, Jim Jordan, Bryan Grant and Art Miller. On the back, the threesome of Adam Noel, Gerald Huebel and Rick Pritchett won with minus 4 . . . Norm Shannon finished plus 5 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Second at plus 2 was Ron Somerville. Jim Brown and Bill Worsham tied for third at plus 1. Barry Jackson was closest to the pin winner on No. 15 . . . In the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, Ed Boone won with plus 10. Jimmy Jackson was second at plus 7, followed by Ralph Childress at plus 5. Jackson (No. 8) and Shannon (No. 15) were closest to the pin winners . . . The 2013 Southern Texas PGA Junior tournament schedule kicks off Monday at Sunset Grove Country Club in Orange. Junior golfers have three options; 1. Little Linksters play 5 & 9 hole tournaments for beginners (ages 6-12); 2. Junior Links consists of 9 hole tournaments for golfers 13-18 needing to improve their skills; 3. Junior Tour is a series of 18 hole events for skilled golfers ages 10-18.
