Area notepad: Top juniors competing in STPGA Tour Championship

Nine juniors from the Golden Triangle, as well as six Little Linksters, qualified for the Southern Texas PGA Tour Championship at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring. Leading the area contingent from Boys 16-18 are Braden Bailey, Jarrod Brown and Tyler Rawson. Qualifers from Boys 13-15 include Thaine Tillie, Bryce Shaver and Tyler Ford. Josh Elmore made it from Boys 10-12. On the girls side, Felicia Sauceda (Girls 16-18) and Karlei Hemler (Girls 13-15) are in the field. They will be competing against the top juniors from Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Bryan/College Station and the Rio Grande Valley in 36 holes of medal play today and Thursday. Qualifers from Little Linksters include Jack Burke, Hunter Christman, Timothy Feemster and Zac Hansen (Boys 10-12, 9-hole red) and Micah Depew and Chandler Green (Co-ed 6-9, 9-hole modified) . . . Formerly Lamar standout Dawie Van Der Walt, flirted with history, as well as his first win on the Tour (formerly the Nationwide Tour) this past weekend. Van Der Walt, however, settled for a career low 60 in the final round of the Cox Classic in Omaha, Neb., finishing second, two shots behind winner Ben Kohles to collect his biggest ever professional check of $70,200. The closing 60 moved Van Der Walt from 34th place to second. He missed an 8-foot eagle putt on No. 17 and a 6-foot birdie on No. 18. Had he made either putt, he’d have joined professional golf’s ultra-exclusive 59 club. Van Der Walt was the 2007 Southland Conference champion and Player of the Year, and a three-time Ping All-America . . . Congratulations are in order for Tommy Prejan. Playing at The Patch, the 66-year-old Prejean shot his age for the first time . . . In the Patch Seniors 50 Plus game, played in a 2 ball format, the team of Jimmy Fetters, Keith Rochau, Mark Meents and Glenn Frederick won the front nine in minus 7. On the back, the team of Roddy Weatherly, Gerald Huebel, Walter Colvin and  T. Johnson finished first with minus 6 . . . Jim Brown finished plus 3 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Raymond Rice was second at plus 2 and Norm Shannon won closest to the pin on No. 15. In the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, Shannon won with plus 3. Barry Jackson was second at zero. Dennis Neef was closest to the pin winner on No. 15 . . . The Senior Game at The Babe was played in a 2-ball format, with the team of Bill Hanley, Earl Richard, Larry Foster and Stedman Tahaney combining for a minus 4 to win the front. On the back, minus 3 was good enough to win for the foursome of Larry Stansbury, Jim Cooper, Larry Rogers and Billy Mack. Closest to the pin winners were Bill Fears (No. 2), Harry Green (No. 7),  Bill Hanley (No. 120 and Mark Petry (No. 15) . . . Upcoming Aug. 25 at Belle Oaks is the 3rd annual Olympic Dreams tournament benefiting Kyle Huckaby, the Nederland teenager who has built a remarkable sports resume despite his disabilities. The tournament is a four-person scramble, with a $75 per player entry fee and a 9 a.m. shotugn. For the past two years, the event has raised money for Huckaby’s basketball wheelchair and expenses for two-to-three trips per  week to Houston for practices. Kyle’s latest endeavor is sled hockey. He recently traveled to New York to try out and was chosen to play goalie for the 2012-2013 USA Developmental Sled Hockey Team. Anyone wishing to participate in the scramble should call the Belle Oaks golf shop at 796-1311.
