West golf notepad: Gene Nobles scores ace at Zaharias

PORT ARTHUR — Gene Nobles of Port Neches scored a hole in one at Babe Zaharias when he sank his tee shot on the 119-yard, 15th hole. Nobles used a wedge for what was his second ace. The shot was witnessed by Pat Radcliff, Roger Monarch, Danny Maxwell and Delbert Holstead . . . Former Lamar golfer Shawn Stefani moved a step closer to securing his PGA Tour card for 2013 with a closing 63 than earned him a T7 and a check for $22,595 in the Web.com Tour’s Boise Open. Stefani moved up to No. 13 on the Web.com money list, with three events remaining. PGA Tour cards go to all players in the tour’s top 25. Another LU ex, Dawie van Der Walt, after opening 65-65, faded to a tie for 19th, won only $8,182 and is No. 29 on the money list . . . PN-G’s rising sophomore star Braden Bailey has received an invitation to participate in the Legends Junior Tour’s prestigious Texas Cup Invitational Oct. 20-21 at The Honors Club in Carrollton. Should Bailey win the event, which boasts a star-studded field of junior golfers, he’d be fully exempt on American Junior Golf Association Tour in 2013 . . . PN-G’s golf team, which is expected to be a serious contender for the 4A state championship, kicks off its season Oct. 8 with the Onion Creek Texas State Preview Tournament in Austin. The Onion Creek course is the new site for the 4A state tourney. The second annual fundraiser for the PN-G team is set for Oct. 27 at The Patch. It’s a four-person scramble with a $50 per player entry fee fee. Shotgun starts are planned for 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Last year’s event raised over $10,000 for the golf  team . . . The team of Charles Heider, Jadon Ellender, Paul Scuch and Rich Flores shot 5 under to win the 17th Annual Groves Volunteer Fire Department Benefit Tournament.  Format for the event was a blind draw, 2 best ball. Placing second with a minus 1 was the foursome of Tommy Prejean, Daarrin Loftin, Jacob Monceaux and Aaron Daniels. Third place at plus 4 went to the team of Larry Morris, George Jones, Jason Crochet and Jack Wiggins. Jadon Ellender won the medal play portion of the tourney with 67. Richard Scully was second at 70 and Charles Heider third at 71. Monceaux (No. 9) and Scully (No. 18) won the long drive contest. Lance Matthews (No. 4), Roddy Weatherly (No. 7), Stewart Brown (No. 13) and Taylor Reese (No. 16) were closest to the pin winners . . . The Senior Game at The Patch was played in a 2 ball format. The front nine was won in minus 6 by the team of Richard McClelland, Charles Cooksey, Tony Trevino and Don Torey. On the back nine, the team of Roddy Weatherly, Gary Tompkins, Bill Draughon, Tommy Lemire and Buddy Bailey won with minus 7 . . . Bruce Bird finished plus 5 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Barry Jackson was second at plus 4. Jim Brown was the closest to the pin winner on No. 15. In the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, Ron Somerville won with plus 5. Bill Taylor was second at plus 2 and Jackson third at plus . . . The Senior Game at The Babe was played in a Team Select Drive format. Placing first at plus 42 was the foursome of Rick Pritchett, Dwain Morrsion, Dicky Robinson and Ned Cole. Second at plus 40 was the foursome of Eddie Delk, Ron Overstreet, Paul Duplantis and Charles Leard. Third at plus 29 was the team of Dennis Frazier, Harry Green, Ken Fabre and Larry Foster. Closest to the pin winners were E.T. Robicheaux (No. 2),  Jim Cooper (No. 7), Delk  (No. 12 and Dillard Darbonne (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at Babe Zaharias was played in a 2 ball format. The team of Jim Jordan, Bret Yellot, Harry Green and Charlie Huckaby won the front in minus 4. On the back, the foursome of Adam Noel, Gene Rountree, Lee Bertrand and Harold Wilkinson won with even par . . . The 17th Annual Joe Williamson Memorial Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, Oct. 6 at Babe Zaharias. Entry fee is $50 per person for the two-person scramble, and includes greens fee, cart, food and drinks. Each player will be allowed to purchase two $5 mulligans. Play will commence at 8 a.m. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund for Nederland and Port Neches-Groves students. Call 722-8286 to enter.
