Belle Oaks under siege from hungry wild hogs
Bob West golf notepad for Wednesday, Oct 14
Add wild hogs to the list of obstacles Byran Jackson has had to overcome as superintendent/head pro at Belle Oaks Golf Club.
Jackson, who spent the last 12 months restoring Belle Oaks from a second devastating hurricane in five years, now must repair the unsightly damage inflicted by wild hogs Monday night. Hardest hit was the tee box on No. 11, but holes 5, 6, 7 and 12 also were uprooted in places.
In addition, there was some damage done to the adjacent Lake Estates development of Belle Oaks co- owners Jerry Braxton and Brian Phelps.
It’s the second time in 2009 that Belle Oaks has encountered hog problems. Jackson also had to deal with an influx back in the spring. Most of the damage at that time was done to the area between the No. 11 tee box and the teeing area on No. 2.
As he did then, Jackson set out a hog trap. He wound up capturing and killing five of the pests. Based on the widespread digging, he anticipates getting at least that many this time.
“Because of all the rain, the areas where they usually feed are flooded,” he said. “So they come over to the golf course. We know exactly where they are coming from and we’ll be ready for them. I have my hunting license and a gun. We have to stop the damage to the golf course.”
Other than the 11th tee, which is seriously torn up from the white markers forward, Jackson said the mess caused by the hogs won’t impede golfers. On most of the other holes, they dug up areas along the rough line.
“It mostly a nuisance,” he said. “But it’s going to take a while to get the 11th tee box back in shape. We’ll need to bring in a load of sand. Some parts of it are playable and we’ll just work around the damaged areas.”
