Picking against Tiger Woods can lead to embarrassment
Bob West golf notepad for Wednesday, June 18

The Port Arthur News

Many thanks to all those who have reminded me that on Sunday, June 9, I wrote that the odds are better of Tiger Woods missing the cut than winning the U.S. Open. Obviously, only an idiot would make such a statement about the greatest player in the history of the game.

In the idiot’s defense, it should also be pointed out that the opening words to that column were as follows: “If Tiger Woods wins the upcoming U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, it will hands down be his greatest single achievement as a professional.”

Perhaps you heard or read that shortly after his gripping playoff victory over Rocco Mediate Monday, Tiger labeled the 108th U.S. Open as his greatest victory.

After watching him pull off what I still consider a totally improbable victory, because of a knee problem that’s worse that most realize, I’m going to climb back out on the limb.

He’ll never top this one.

Never and Tiger Woods should probably never be placed in the same sentence, but what we witnessed over a five-day period at Torrey Pines arguably stands alone among all-time championship performances in all sports. The argument, I think, will be strenthened when more information on his knee is disclosed.

Don’t be shocked if Tiger shuts it down after the PGA, and perhaps earlier, for a more serious procedure on the knee that sidelines him several months.

In the meantime, everybody should relish having the opportunity to watch this guy perform. He’s the best of the best in any sport, in an era, and his ability to deliver memorable moments in the clutch is pretty much otherwordly.

Also, drink a toast to unheradled Rocco Mediate for a performance that rivaled Tiger’s for being gutsy. He’ll go down as one of the few golfers who wasn’t intimdated in Tiger’s presence.
