Champions Tour tourney is being moved to Woodlands

After a six-year absence, professional golf is returning to what was long known as the TPC Course at The Woodlands.

Now called The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course, the Robert von Hagge layout will host Champions Tour players for the Administaff Small Business Classic Oct. 17-19. Augusta Pines Golf Club has hosted the Administaff the past four years.

“A majority of the current Champions Tour players have played the Tournament Course through the years and we know they will enjoy coming back to familiar ground,” said Bryan Naugle, executive director of the event.

Several current Champions Tour players won the Shell Houston Open on the TPC track. Among them are Raymond Floyd (1985), Curtis Strange (1986), 1988), Jay Haas (1987), Tony Sills (1990), Fred Funk (1992) and Phil Blackmar (1987).

Bernhard Langer is expect to return to Houston to defend his Administaff Small Business Classic title. The 2008 tournament will carry a purse of $1.7 million.

CHIP SHOTS: Nobody was happier than Jack Calhoun of Orange that a group of traveling golfers from Southeast Texas selected Tour 18 for their weekly outing last Wednesday. Calhoun sank a 7-iron for a hole in one on the 114 yard, 11th. John Cobb Williams, Jack Anderson and Jesse Smothers witnessed the shot . . . PN-G and Lamar ex Andrew Landry has earned second team All Southeastern Conference recognition for the second consecutive season. Landry led Arkansas with a 72.61 scoring average in 11 events, had seven top-10 finishes and fired five rounds in the 60s. He was Arkansas’ low man in eight of 11 tournaments and had two top fives. Landry is ranked No. 52 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index . . . Apologies to Sabine Pass golfer Cody Almomd, who was referred to as Cody Blair in this space last week, after his strong showing in the Class A regional. Sorry about that Cody . . . Congratulations to 13-year-old Jarrod Brown for shooting his best ever round of 74 recently at The Patch. Jarrod made three birdies on the way to nines of 38-36. His playing partners were Jordan Corcoran and Cody Feemster . . . Shane Trahan and his dad, Chris Oliver, teamed up for a 67 to finish in a three-way tie for first place last weekend at the ESPN National Golf Challenge at Mallard Cove Golf Club in Lake Charles. Shane and Chris lost on the second playoff hole and are first alternates for the national tournament . . . Owen Joyner shot a 54-hole score of two-over-par 215 to win championship flight in the Tyrrell Garth Jr. Invitational at Beaumont Country Club. Giles Kibbe was second at 216, followed by Paul Moore at 219 and Brock Wilson at 220. Flight winners, who won two matches, then posted the low score in a final round of medal competition, were Brian Mack in First, Bob West in Second, Billy Tubbs in Third and Cimron Campbell in Fourth . . . Chuck Schwepfinger of Port Arthur matched his age with an 83 at Babe Zaharias. Witnesses were Murphy DeMarcay, Jack Mades, Bryan Grant and Leonard Giblin . . . Reggie Bunyard carded a net 62 to win the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks Golf Club. Norm Pasche and Robert Bunyard tied for second with 67s. Pasche was closest to the hole winner on No. 15 . . . Roy Martinez posted a net 63 to win the Wednesday Seniors at The Palms at Pleasure Island. George Broussard finished second with a 66 and Frank Assunto was third at 67. Macy Dubose (No. 7) and John Bass (No. 11) were closest to the hole winners . . . The Senior 65 Plus game at Babe Zaharias was played in a Team Select Drive Format. The team of Tommy Trahan, Joe Benoit, Ned Cole and Dwain Morrision won at plus 42. Second at plus 39 went to the foursome of Mike Hess, Ben Thornton, Bill Allen and Paul Brown. The team of Adam Noel, Henry Taylor, Jess Stelly and Dwain Taylor was third at plus 32. Closest to the hole winners were Jess Evans (No. 2), Cole (No. 7), John DuFour (No. 12) and Benoit (No. 15) . . . There was a three-way tie for first in the Babe Zaharias DogFight. The foursome of Cole Lee, Billy Thillet, Jerry May and Dave Martin finished 17&5. The team of Adam Noel, J.R. Bardin, Bobby Hebert and Don Varing was 17&3, as was the foursome of Larry Johnson, Dennis Frazier, Ben Thornton and Gary Anderson. Closest to the hole winners were Frazier (No. 2), Lee (No. 7), Larry Thompson (No. 12) and Teddy Davis (No. 15) . . . The Belle Oaks DogFight was won at 18&2 by the team of Ricky Brunner, Dave English, John House and Gary Fontenot. Second at 17&3 was the team of Tim Turner, Roger Baumer, Jeff Rinehart and Cap Hollier. Closest to the pin winners were Pat Waite (No. 8) and Allen Sohoski (No. 15) . . .
