Nederland’s 22-4A champions headed to regional tourney

Nederland’s boys golf team, coming off winning the District 22-4A championship three weeks ago, are headed to Conroe to participate in the Region III, 4A championships at Raven’s Nest Golf Club Thursday and Friday.

Coach Butch Tillie’s team shot rounds of 329-325 over The Palms at Pleasure Island and Brentwood Country Club for a 654 to defeat LC-M by seven shots for the 22-4A title.

Nederland was paced by Timmy Roberts (86-76-162) and Beau Blackwell (78-84). Other Bulldogs playing at regional will be Josh Crum (81-84-165), Nick Brocato (86-81-167) and Alec Bruney (84-84-168).

Two Port Neches-Groves players will be particpating in the indiviudal competition at regional. Trent Boudoin (75-73-148) qualifed as 22-4A medalist and Drew Barnett (86-79-165) qualified by as the No. 6 medalist.

Also representing 22-4A will be LC-M’s team, headed by district runerup Zane Callier (77-79-156).

Nederland’s girls team, which also won a District 22-4A championship, placed eighth out of 15 teams in their regional tournament contested Monday and Tuesday at Waterwood Golf Club. Nederland shot 429-440 for a 36-hole score of 869.

Montgomery Purple won the team title with a 629. Montomgery Gold finished second at 678.

Nederland’s scores from Tuesday were Marlee Wilson 88, Jamie Harrell 112, Hallie Baker 118, Kayla Bass 122 and Samamtha Kim 125. PN-G’s Brianne Keeney, playing as a medalist, shot 119.

CHIP SHOTS: Barry Jackson and Wally Istre shot net 66s to tie for first place in the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. David English finished second at 68 and Jim Robinson and Jim Brown tied for fourth with 70s. Robinson was the closest to the pin winner on both No. 8 and No. 15 . . . Marshall Rowe and George Broussard tied for first with net 67s in the Wednesday Senior tournament at The Palms at Pleasure Island. Joe Landry was third with a 69. Landry was also closest to the hole winner on No. 14 . . . The Patch Senior game, played in a 2 ball format, was won at minus 9 by the team of M. Roccaforte, Gerald Huebel, Jim Johns, Don MacNeal and Leo Bacon. Second place at minus 7 went to the team of David Girouard, Bob Barnes, Benny Epperson and Paul Duplantis . . . The Babe Zaharias Senior 65 Plus game was played in a team points format. The foursome of Art Lecoq, Joe Benoit, John Culbertson and Dwain Morrison won with plus 14. Second at plus 9 was the tema of Red Brown, Jess Stelly and Paul Brown. Closest to the pin winners were Ben Thornton (No. 7) and Jack Hackbarth (No. 15) . . . The Babe Zaharias DogFight was won by the team of Kenny Robbins, Mark Petry, Jerry May and Harold Wilkinson (16&3). Tying for second was the team of Tom O’Grady, Dennis Shaw, Jim Cooper and Dave Sturgal (15&3) and the foursome of Rick Pritchett, Malcolm Tiller, Jess McPhillips and Robert Lynch (15&2). Closest to the hole winners were Dennis Shaw (No. 2), John House (No. 7), Jess McPhillips (No. 12) and Kenneth Belaire (No. 15) . . . The Belle Oaks DogFight was won by the team of Mitch Priddy, Bill Hatfield, Larry Johnson and Jobie Irvine (17&6). Second at 16&5 went to the foursome of Wadsworth Thompson, Larry Thompson, David English and Roger Baumer. Allen Sohoski (No. 3) and Bill Hatfield (No. 12) . . . Former Port Neches-Groves golfer Andrew Landry, playing for Arkansas, shot rounds of 71-71-74 for a two-over 218 at the Southeastern Conference championships at St. Simons Island, Ga. Landry placed 15th . . . Anyone wishing to participate in the Sertoma Club’s 19th annual tournament benefitting children and adults with speech and hearing defects should call Jim Silvernail at 796-1195. The four-person scramble event will be played Friday at Belle Oaks Golf Club. Entry is $75 per player.
