Anyone who enjoys playing the well maintained Wildwood Golf Club, and participating in individual stroke play events, might want to give some serious thoughts to the April 19-20 Wildwood Open.
Wildwood head pro Richard Cockrell, motivated by a feeling that the area needs more stroke-play events, approached Clear Channel Radio about sponsoring one on his course. Cockrell talked with Al Caldwell, of KLVI and Clear Channel, about the idea and Caldwell signed on.
The 36-hole tournament features a professional flight and four amateur flights. Among the early entries on the pro side are Michael Arnaud and Jimmy Fetters. Cockrell is shooting for a 25-man pro flight. If he gets it, the first place check will be $2,500.
Prizes in the amateur flights will be flat screen plasma televisions, rather than the usual golf shop merchandise. First place in each flight will be a 50 inch TV. The number of flat screens given in each flight will depend on the size of the field.
Entry fee is $150 for the amateur flight and $250 for the pro flight. A shared cart costs an extra $10 per day. Entry forms can be obtained by calling the Wildwood Golf Shop at 834-2940. Each entrant must provide a verified handicap.
