Williams, Clark find range for holes in 1
Bob West column for Wednesday, March 26
The Port Arthur News
Holes in one have been few and far been during the first three months of 2008, but John Williams and Don Clark, both of Port Neches, accelerated the pace during the past last week. Williams, using a 9-iron, sank his tee shot on the 130-yard, 17th on the Bayou Back at Bayou Din. Sam Loyacano, Butch Pittman and Jobie Irvine witnessed the shot. It was Williams’ third hole in one . . . Clark authored his ace on the 120-yard, 15th at Babe Zaharias, using a pitching wedge. His playing companions included Charles Martin and Dennis Gesser . . . Zaharias was also the scene of a couple of eagles on 4 par holes last week. Billy Tucker of Port Neches, using a pitching wedge, dropped his second shot on the 401-yard, 17th. Witnesses were John Williams, Clay Lewis and Calvin LaGrappe. Eighty-year-old Ken Cook of Winnie made his 2 on the 337-yard 14th, by holing out a 6-iron. Witnesses were Tommy Trahan and Paul Brown. The eagle helped Cook’s team tie for first in the Senior 65 Plus Game. They finished at plus 9, as did the foursome of Cecil Bourgeois, Paul Duplantis, Joe Benoit and Dwain Turner. Third place at plus 6 went to the team of Ron Block, Ray Holm, Gary Wagner and Charlie Macha. Closest to the pin winners were Paul Duplantis (No. 2, No. 15), Jess Evans (No. 7) and Bill Allen (No. 12) . . . Twyman Ash and Norm Shannon carded net 67s to tie for first in the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Reggie Bunyard finished third with a 67, while Jim Robinson and Norm Pasche tied for fourth at 70. Ash won closest to the pin on both No. 8 and No. 15 . . . Bunyard, with a net 60, was the winner in The Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks. He edged Ralph Chilrdress by one stroke. Shannon placed third at 65, with Pashe fourth at 66. Shannon (No. 8) and Pasche (No. 15) were closest to the pin winners . . . John Bass blew away the field in the Wednesday Seniors at The Palms at Pleasure Island, firing a net 62. Helping the Bass blowout was an eagle 3 on the 466-yard, par 5, 13th. Nine strokes back in a tie for second was the trio of Ray Trahan, Richard Briggs and Joe Bennett . . . The team of Scott Meents, Allen Sohoski, Buddy Silcox and Sam Loyacano won the Belle Oaks DogFight at 21&8. Second at 20&7 was the trio of Richard Briggs, Larry Johnson and Leonard Hendrickson. The foursome of Troy Touchet, Ricky Brunner, Gene Harrison and Charlie Huckaby (18&5) finished third. Loyacano swept the closest-to-the-pin contests on No. 3 and No. 15 . . . There was a two-way tie for first in the Babe Zaharias DogFight. The team of Hilario Padia, Pete Reobroi, Gary Wagner and Billy Pennington finished 13&5 while the fivesome of Drake Romero, Adam Noel, Jim Cooper, Jack Anderson and Dave Sturgal was 13&3 . . . The team of Cory Pierce, Ray Pierce, Jason Bacha and Ron Ciruti shot a 57, then won a scorecard playoff to place finish in the Jim Gilligan/Lamar Baseball Scramble Monday at Brentwood Country Club. Also shooting 57 was the team of Jenson Millar, Will Henderson and Chad Ott . . . World No. 4 Steve Stricker is the latest highly ranked player to commit to next week’s Shell Houston Open. Stricker joins a field that includes No. 2 Phil Mickelson, No. 3 Ernie Els, No. 5 Adam Scott, No. 6 K.J. Choi, No. 11 Padraig Harrington and No. 16 Angel Cabrera. More big names are expected to sign on before entries close Friday at 5 p.m. As of now, former Lamar University All-America Chris Stroud is in the field . . . Former PA News sports writer Burt Darden, now the Director of Communications for the Houston Golf Association for the Houston Golf Association, will join me on Sportsrap next Monday night to talk about the SHO.
