West area notepad: Tom Lawton sinks sixth hole in one

PORT ARTHUR — Tom Lawton of Groves continues to be one of the area’s most prolific golfers when it comes to aces. Lawton scored his 6th hole in one on Friday at Babe Zaharias, using a 9-iron on the 105-yard, 6th. Witnesses were Robert Lynch, Bryan Grant, Lee Terro and Mark Hanlon . . . Drake Romero of Groves fired a best ever round of 66 on Saturday at Zaharias, rolling in 7 birdies against a lone bogey. All those birdies were witnessed by Monroe Pratt Jr., Bubba Brevell and Cody Metts . . . Charles Heider needed a second sudden death hole to win the Open Division of the Belle Oaks Open. Heider shot rounds of 72-73 for a one-over par 145, which Richard Scully matched with 71-74. Roddy Weatherly, with a 146 (72-74) won the Senior Open Division by two strokes over Rick Labove (74-74). In the Senior Division 2nd Flight, Bill Taylor prevailed with a 162 (79-83). Bill Worsham was second at 174 . . . Voting is under way in four categories in the 3rd annual Bade Didrikson Zaharias Junior golfer of the Year Awards presented by the Babe Zaharias Foundation and The First Tee of the Golden Triangle. Winners of the Players of the Year and Leadership awards for both boys and girls will be announced at a banquet on May 17. Golf pros and media members do the voting for the awards, which were the brainchild of The First Tee of the Golden Triangle Executive Director Jerry Honza . . . For the second consecutive year, The Insperity Championship at The Woodlands is featuring a Saturday 18-hole exhibition involving Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and eight more of the game’s all-time greats. New to the field this year is NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller. There will be four groups of legends competing a three-man scramble format. They tee off  Saturday afternoon, following the final group in the second round of the Champions Tour’s Insperity Classic. Highlights of the legends can be seen Saturday between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel’s tournament coverage. Admission at the Woodlands Tournament Course is free for all three days of The Insperity . . . Joe Vanderweg finished plus 5 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Norm Shannon was second at plus 4 and Barry Jackson and Jim Brown tied for third at plus 3. Jackson won closest to the pin on No 15 . . . In the Friday Senior Game at Belle Oaks, Twyman Ash won with plus seven. Bill Worsham was second at plus 4 and Jackson third at plus 2 . . .The Senior Game at the Babe was played in a 4 person, 2 ball handicapped format. On the front nine, the team of Larry Jackson, Larry Vicknair, Larry Rogers and Pete Reobroi won with minus 12. On the back, the foursome of David English, Dennis Frazier, Guy Van Cleve and Dwight Duck came in first at minus 13. Closest to the pin winners were Gene Hardy (No. 2), Frazier (No. 7), Johnson (No. 12) and Ron Mistrot (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at The Babe was played in a 2 ball format. On the front, the team of Lee Soliz, Harrell Guidry, Ivory Hatch, Roger Koch and Jim Thompson won with minus 7. The back went to the team of Craig Fontenot, Thad Borne, Jim Jordan and Lee Bertrand at minus 5 . . . The Monday Babe Senior 50 Plus game was also played in a 2 ball format. Winning with minus 6 on the front was the team of Tony Trevino, Don MacNeil, E.T. Robicheaux and Allen Suire. Minus 5 won the back for the foursome of Steve Picou, Gary Fontenot, Ed Hetzel and Larry Vicknair.
