West golf notepad: Games People Play in Christmas spirit

PORT ARTHUR —     Anyone looking for a Christmas gift for a golfer would do well to get by Games People Play in Beaumont before its Customer Appreciation Week ends.  Even if  you’re not looking for a gift, but perhaps a golf bargain for yourself or a fix on your swing, Games would be a worthwhile stop, especially Wednesday or Friday.

    On Wednesday, PGA pros will be available at Games until 6 p.m. to analyze swings for free. Also being offered is a free lunch from McAlister’s Deli from noon until 2 p.m. and a short game clinic that’s set to begin promptly at 5:30 p.m.

    On Friday, Games will have a DJ on hand, will be giving out door prizes and goody bags and will have representatives on present from major golf brands to do fitting and demo their latest gear. Games will  provide links, boudoin and drinks from Zummos from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and be offering special deals on in-store merchandise throughout the day.

    CHIP SHOTS: Jim Jordan of Nederland has presented himself with a hole in one for an early Christmas present. Jordan, using a pitching wedge, sank his tee shot from 105 yards on No. 15 at Babe Zaharias. It was his second ace. Witnessing the shot were Gene Jones, Gerald Huebel and Harold Wilkinson . . . First high school golf rankings of the year are out — yes, their is a ranking service for golf — and Port Neches-Groves is No. 1 in 4A. Dallas Highland Park and Huntsville are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. In the individual player rankings, PN-G’s Braden Bailey is No. 3 and teammate Jarrod Brown is No. 9. Top ranked 4A player in the state is Jake Potter of Highland Park . . . The Senior Game at the Babe used two formats for two-man teams — best ball on the front and scramble on the back. The duo of Bill Hanley-Rick Pritchett won First Flight with a 64, besting Raymond Darbonne-Ron Sciarrilla by three shots. In Second Flight, Paul Duplantis-Larry Foster teamed for 72 to edge Bill Jones-Andy Bedair by a stroke. Third Flight went to Joe Benoit-John Overland with a 77. Jobie Irvine-Bernie Johnson and Charlie Huckaby-L.J. Hardy tied for second with a 78. Closest to the pin winners were Bob Byerly (No. 2), Dillard Darbonne (No. 7), Raymond Darbonne (No. 12) and Gary Anderson (No. 15) . . .The Babe Zaharias DogFight was won at 18&5 by the team of Cody Metts, Jim Cooper, Alex Espinoza and Maurice Ross. Second place at 17&5 went to the foursome of Bill Hanley, Rick Pritchett, Gary Anderson and Dillard Darbonne. Closest to the hole winners were Jeff Rinehart (No. 2), Cooper (No. 7), Mark Petry (No. 12) and Adam Noel (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at Babe Zaharias saw the team of Dwain Anderson, Rick Pritchett, Ron Sciarrilla, Jeff Huffman and Steve Cameron win the front in minus 8 and tie the back with minus 5. Also posting minus 5 on the back was the team of Bill Hanley, Adam Noel, Bob Moore and Glen Marino . . . The Senior 50 Plus Game at The Patch was played in a 2 ball format. On the front, the team of Larry Morris, Robert Bonin, Allen Suire, Ron Theriot and Bill Draughon won with minus 9. That was also the winning score on the back for the team of Dennis Walsh, Tony Trevino, Don Macneil and Benny Epperson . . . Frank Oakley finished plus 9 to win the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Barry Jackson and Ron Somerville tied for second at plus 6. Norm Shannon was closest to the pin winner on No. 8. The Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks was postponed by inclement weather . . . Final event in The First Tee of the Golden Triangle/Southeast Texas PGA Fall Finish is set for Saturday at Babe Zaharias.
