ROCK-A-NOOS TAKE 2 OF 3 IN DICKINSON

DICKINSON — The Port Neches-Groves volleyball team went 2-1 Thursday in the Dickinson tournament.

PN-G (10-3) first swept Crosby 25-23, 25-17. The Rock-A-Noos then fell to Bellville 25-17, 23-25, 25-23 before taking down Galena Park North Shore 25-22, 25-20.

Libbie LeJeune had quite the day with 25 service points, 29 assists and 17 kills while Jade Weatherford put in 26 service points and 24 kills.

Hannah Jones added 22 kills and six blocks, Carley Roccaforte added 15 service points and six blocks and Hannah Hernandez had 32 assists for PN-G. Emily Tolbert led the team with 31 digs while Jessica Harper added 24 and Lauren McCutcheon put in nine kills.

PN-G returns to action against Hamshire-Fannett at 7 tonight.

ARCHER LIMITS ASTROS TO 1 HIT IN RAYS’ WIN

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Archer pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fifth-inning single by Colby Rasmus, and struck out 11 to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Houston Astros 1-0 Thursday night.

It was Archer’s third career shutout and second against the Astros, having also blanked them in 2013.

Archer (11-9) retired the final 15 batters, fanning five. Rasmus led off the fifth with a groundball single and was the last runner for the AL West leaders.

Archer walked Jose Altuve on four pitches to begin the first. Later, Altuve tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt and was thrown out.

In his previous start, Archer allowed 11 hits and eight runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 12-4 loss to Texas.

Desmond Jennings got two hits for Tampa Bay and drove in the lone run with a single in the fourth off Collin McHugh (13-7).

McHugh yielded five hits in seven innings.

TIGERS’ SIMON 1-HITS RANGERS IN 4-0 FEAT

DETROIT (AP) — The Texas Rangers know they can’t give away games as they try to grab the last AL wild-card spot.

On Thursday night, they never had a chance.

Alfredo Simon threw a one-hitter in his first career complete game and the Detroit Tigers beat the Rangers 4-0.

Texas entered play 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild-card spot, while the Tigers were three games further back.

The Rangers’ only hit came with two outs in the fifth, moments after first baseman Victor Martinez had made a diving stop to rob Mitch Moreland of a base hit. Rougned Odor ended the no-hitter with a double to left, but Texas never got a runner past second base.

Simon (11-7) walked two and struck out five. He threw 116 pitches, three short of his career high.

GRIFFIN CONCUSSED, BUT REDSKINS PREVAIL

WASHINGTON — Robert Griffin III has yet another injury to worry about.

Griffin left Thursday’s preseason game against Detroit Lions in the second quarter with a concussion and shoulder stinger, NFL.com reported. Coach Jay Gruden confirmed the concussion.

Gruden also said after the 21-17 victory that Griffin’s shoulder was fine and he would not lose his starting job.
