NEDERLAND — NEDERLAND – Coming off a third-place finish in the BISD YMBL South Texas Shootout, the Nederland boys basketball team will move into the host’s chair this week for the Bulldog Classic. Twelve teams will compete in the three-day event starting Thursday, with both Port Arthur Memorial and Port Neches-Groves playing alongside the Bulldogs.
The tournament will differ from the YMBL in format, as the Bulldog Classic will consist of four pools of three teams each who will play each other before Saturday’s championship bracket. The YMBL was a straight bracket tournament.
Teams will play pool games on Thursday and Friday with the first place teams competing in the Gold Bracket for the tournament championship and the second place teams competing for the Silver Bracket title.
In the event of a tie between teams in each pool, the first tiebreaker will be victory margin for the two games in pool play. If that is also a tie, the second tiebreaker will be points allowed.
In addition to Memorial and PN-G, Beaumont West Brook, West Orange-Stark, Silsbee and Hamshire-Fannett round out the area teams in the tournament. Joining those teams are the Houston Homeschool Christian Youth Association, Breaux Bridge Christian, Houston C.E. King, The Village and Katy Taylor.
Nederland’s Pool A consists of C.E. King and Hamshire-Fannett. Pool B contains HCYA, PN-G and West Brook while Pool C has The Village, Silsbee and Katy Taylor. Memorial rounds out Pool D with WO-S and Breaux Bridge Christian.
Memorial (3-5) and WO-S kick off the tournament on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Dog Dome. The Titans will then play Breaux Bridge Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday. WO-S is 4-5 this season, having lost 62-52 to Nederland on Tuesday. Memorial is coming off a 49-44 loss to Beaumont Central on Tuesday.
