PORT ARTHUR —
For the second time in a week, sophomore Kieran Woods came alive to lead the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks, scoring 30 points to get the Hawks past Bossier Parish Community College 76-67 on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks, ranked 19th in the nation in NJCAA Division I play, improved their record to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Woods scored 34 on Wednesday against Paris Junior College and put in his early bid for an all-conference spot as he led the Hawks offensively Saturday. He also had three rebounds and two steals in the victory.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead, ahead by as many as 11 points with 14 minutes left in the first half. Late in the half, though, Bossier Parish started making its move to close the gap against the Hawks, pulling to within six late in the first period. Less than two minutes into the second half and the Cavaliers tied the game at 40-40.
That's when Woods and freshman teammate Ty Allen went to work in a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Bossier Parish would get as close as six again with four minutes left in the game but Lamar State's stiff defense and its ability on offense to convert turnovers to points put the game away.
Allen finished the game with 14 points while Evan White had 12 and Jamal Shabazz 10 points.
The Seahawks are off for the holiday break until their home tournament on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 at the Carl Parker Center.
