Memorial uses running game, turnovers to rout Westside

(Continued)

HOUSTON — After exchanging three-and-outs, Westside got ball with 1:11 to go on in the second quarter and took only two plays to go 39 yards. The Wolves scored on a nine-yard run by Haywood to bring the score to 21-13 with 29 seconds to go in the half.

That was more than enough time for the Titans, who used a 36-yard kick return to set up a 38-yard touchdown throw from quarterback Tayylor Labrie to Albert Jacobs. Port Arthur Memorial then reached the end zone on its first three possessions after half time, including back-to-back 38-yard touchdown runs.

“I told them during halftime that it was nothing Westside was doing to us,” Harrison said. “We had a lot of positives things happen tonight. We just have to eliminate mistakes.”

Westside scored again on a 58-yard catch-and-run by receiver Bobby Harzog, but it was too little and too late.

Memorial, emphasizing the running game,  completed only five passes. The Titans, as Harrison wanted them to do, dominated on the ground, gaining 222 rushing yards. Martin lead the Titans with 100 yards on 12 carries, including two scores, while Dauphine added 65 yards and two touchdowns.

Labrie finished with 102 total yards and a passing touchdown, and Jacobs was his main target with four catches for 57 yards.

Haywood led the Wolves with 90 rushing yards and 173 yards passing, but was just 13-for-33 with three interceptions. Westside senior receiver Frank Iheanacho, who has committed to Kansas, had five catches for 62 yards.

Memorial returns home next Friday to host Houston Bellaire.
