Errors plague Memorial in scrimmage

PORT ARTHUR — HUMBLE — Mistakes and holes in their execution plagued Memorial’s Titans on this Friday night at Atascocita.

The Titans were on the short end of a 3-2 touchdown count through one varsity half which Port Arthur coach Kenny Harrison  called a good learning experience.

“We could have done a much better job of executing,” Harrison said. “We needed to do a better job with our offense in the red zone and we had a lot of missed tackles.”

“Our offense put our defense in a bad position on some of those times when Atascocita scored.”

Harrison saw his aerial combination of Tayylor Labrie and Roderic Rucker click for two scoring passes.

Coach Craig Stump’s Atascocita team picked off a Titans pass for its lone turnover while Harrison’s PA squad collected three fumble recoveries.

Those turnovers were claimed Jacorie Jones, Melbroderick Matthews, and Dante Lovilotte for Memorial.

“One thing I was pleased with was that we only had one penalty,” Harrison continued.

The Titans and the Eagles played just two live quarters.

The Titans fifth-year mentor was pleased with Labrie’s overall management of the offense.

“I saw a lot of good things tonight and there’s also a lot from watching the film, that we ought to be able to correct,” Harrison said.

“Labrie only made one mistake. The ball got away from him on that interception.

“But the big thing is the missed tackles. Any time you miss tackles, it’s too many,” Harrison said.

Memorial visits Central next Friday in the season opener at Beaumont ISD’s Thomas Center.
