NEDERLAND —  Round 1 of softball’s version of Mid County Madness goes to the Nederland Lady Bulldogs.

Nederland and Port Neches-Groves remained locked in a 0-0 tie through the first three innings until the Lady Bulldogs broke through for four innings and went on to win, 9-1. Nederland is now 3-1 in District 20-4A play while PN-G is now 2-2.

Madyson Guidry shrugged off several innings of trouble to pitch six innings. She gave up the one run and three hits to go with 10 strike outs and seven walks on 132 pitches.

Guidry worked around base runners in the first, fourth and fifth innings. PN-G’slone run came in the sixth inning after Maci Dean doubled and came in on a RBI single by Madison Resch.

Nederland had its chances to score in each of the first three innings but failed to take advantage of runners on base.

Finally, in the fourth the Lady Bulldogs broke through on PN-G starter Dean.

It was something Nederland coach Will Mallett was heard telling his team during the game. He wanted them to be patient because he felt the time would come to score runs.

“It’s going to happen,” Mallett said after the game. “We have speed and power. It only takes one little spark to start the fire.”

The spark started to appear in the bottom of the fourth when Hannah Smith and Bailey Beard led off with back-to-back singles. Braxie Gallier then was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Madelyn Daniel was then hit by a pitch to score Smith and then with one out, Savana Guidry turned the spark into the big fire.

Guidry smashed a pitch down the rightfield line to score all three runners to put Nederland up 4-0.

The three-run triple from Guidry also spelled the end of the night for Dean on the mound. She gave up five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings of work.

Taylor Davis in the bottom of the fifth kept the fuel on the flame by leading off with a triple to right and later scored when Kelsey Beard hit a RBI double to left.

Beard would score to make it 6-0 Nederland when Gallier hit a sacrifice fly.

Nederland scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game on ice.

Tori Cooper scored off a RBI double by Beard, Beard scored on a Davis double and Davis crossed the plate when smith hit a RBI single to center.

Cooper worked the seventh inning and collected two strike outs to complete the victory.

“The last four days have been crazy with a trip to Livingston, a 13-inning win over LC-M and now tonight,” Mallett said. “We want to keep our focus on keeping that fire lit. We have a great group of kids this year. They believe in me and I believe in them. They are a talented group of kids and the pressure is on me to make sure I constantly get the best out of them.”

Kelsey Beard finished with two doubles and a RBI for Nederland Davis added a triple, a double and two runs. Bailey Beard scored twice.

Tori Jackson and Shelby Valentine each walked twice for PN-G. The Lady Indians return to the Reservation Tuesday against Vidor while Nederland hits the road today to face Beaumont Ozen.
