Port Arthur Memorial finished its first day at the Texas 7-on-7 state championships with a 2-1 record on Friday, but got bounced to the consolation bracket thanks to point differential.
Memorial beat Frisco Centennial 27-18 and El Paso Montwood 39-27 but lost 19-13 to Pearland and finished third in Pool J. Memorial, Montwood and Pearland all finished with 2-1 records, as Montwood beat Pearland and Centennial, while Pearland beat Centennial and Memorial.
Montwood and Pearland scored 97 and 95 points, respectively, while Memorial scored 79 points in those three games.
The Titans will play Mercedes in the opening round of the consolation bracket at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Memorial went into the consolation bracket last season but stormed all the way to the semifinals before falling to Tyler John Tyler.
Two teams in Division II played in the consolation bracket Friday. Both Jasper and Kountze lost in the first round. Jasper fell 32-7 to Cameron while Kountze fell 39-13 to Coleman.
Graham beat Argyle 33-31 in the Division II championship bracket finals while Carthage beat McGregor 46-20 in the consolation championship.
