The Port Arthur News
When in the basketball playoffs, do as your opponent team does, just better.
Port Arthur Memorial head coach Kevin Henry had his team living by that made-up mantra, as the Lady Titans won their bidistrict playoff game with Pasadena Memorial 61-48 Tuesday at Channelview.
The Lady Mavericks came into the game featuring a tough defense that averaged just 35 points allowed per game in their last seven contests.
So, the Lady Titans turned up the defensive pressure early and often. Memorial held Pasadena Memorial to just 29 points through the first three quarters before the Lady Mavs staged a comeback in the fourth.
Port Arthur Memorial (27-6) will play Class 5A’s No. 3 team, Clear Springs, at 2 p.m. Saturday in Channelview in the area round of the playoffs. Clear Springs beat Fort Bend Kempner 73-34 on Monday in bidistrict play to advance and the Lady Chargers have only lost twice this season.
Memorial was led in scoring by Joyce Kennerson, who had 14, and Loren Evans, who chipped in 12 points. Teammate Crystal Sallier added 11 points. Pasadena Memorial’s leading scorer was Jessica Elkins, who had 26.
The Lady Titans lost 79-56 to Clear Springs last season in the area round. The Lady Chargers went on to the regional semifinals before falling to Elsik.
