Torian Lott's 30 points leads Port Arthur Memorial over Houston Furr at Gamble Classic

PORT ARTHUR — Torian Lott stood tall on Thursday, hitting all seven of Port Arthur Memorial’s 3-pointers in a 80-54 romp over Houston Furr to open the 2012 James Gamble Classic.

The junior point guard had a game-high 30 points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals and was a key to Memorial’s early success. Lott hit two of his 3-pointers to open the game, combining with a quick two from Ron Taylor to give the Titans an 8-0 lead that turned into a 24-9 margin by the end of the first and a 40-19 lead by halftime.

“We came out with some intensity,” Memorial head coach Travis Williams said. “I felt like we did a good job of that. I think our offense was better. We wanted to push the ball a bit and we did that. I’ll take these any day of the week.”

The Memorial defense played a big part in that, as the Titans held Furr to 3 of 20 shooting halfway through the second quarter. Memorial also dominated the boards, outrebounding Furr 42-23 for the game and 23-10 in the first half alone.

Dorian Chatman led the way inside for the Titans, scoring 21 points, grabbing 11 rebounds with a block, an assist and two steals while matched up with big Furr forward Bobby Reeves. Chatman had a couple of empathetic dunks in the lane and a few putbacks on offense in what Williams called his best game of the season.

“I thought we pushed the ball better and I thought we did a better job defensively,” Williams said. “We did a better job defensively and a better job rebounding. We had some lapses, giving them some second-chance points, but we got better.”

Memorial played nearly flawless basketball for the first six minutes of the game, as the Titans combined for six assists. Seven different Titans scored points that quarter, with the team moving the ball well on the perimeter, flashing to the paint when necessary, and, of course, Lott raining threes from outside.

TreVaughn Dennis added eight points and five rebounds for the Titans while Joseph Williams had six points, four rebounds and a steal. For Furr, Modest Welch led the way with 14 points while Patrick Linton had 13 points, two rebounds and two assists. Reeves finished with just two points, but had 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Beaumont Ozen beat Houston North Forest 69-42 and advanced to the semifinals after it got a bye in the second round. Ozen will play the winner of Memorial and Kashmere at 6 p.m. Friday.

Lake Charles Washington Marion beat Fort Bend Hightower 75-22. Beaumont West Brook beat Fort Bend Ridge Point 54-51 and will play Washington Marion at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Beaumont Central beat Longview 67-64 and gets the same second round bye as Ozen, facing the winner of the West Brook-Washington Marion matchup at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
