Chester Moore column: Sabine Lake getting artificial reef

PORT ARTHUR —  Just before deadline for this column, I learned of an artificial reef being put in Sabine Lake.

In fact, it is literally being put in right now and is a project of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

I will have a more detailed story next week but I have verified it is along the southwest shoreline of the lake and there are three work areas where 145 by 85 feet reef clusters are being put out as fish habitat.

Lake Calcasieu has had a successful reef program for a number of years so it is exciting to see one being put on Sabine Lake.

We will have far more details last week but wanted to let you know the basics of what was going on before deadline time.

Make sure and check out next Thursday’s edition.

B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization, will host Bassmaster Elite Seroes at Toledo Bend, Thursday through Sunday in Many, La. This event marks the 14th time B.A.S.S. has held a professional tournament on Toledo Bend and is the fourth of nine Bassmaster Elite Series professional bass fishing tournaments scheduled in 2014.

More than 100 of the top bass anglers in the world will compete for a $100,000 prize and coveted entry into the 2015 Bassmaster Classic to be held in Greenville, S.C. The field of competitors includes fishing superstar Kevin VanDam and 2014 Bassmaster Classic Champion Randy Howell.

From watching the anglers launch to the daily weigh-in, there are a number of activities planned throughout the weekend and they are free and open to the public.

The Sabine Parish Tourist Commission will also be hosting a children’s festival, live music and fireworks display in conjunction with the Elite Series Expo.

The children’s festival will have bounce houses, face painting and the Long Tall Texan making balloon animals.
