NEDERLAND —  Last year the center of the Nederland Bulldog Classic was around Homeschool Christian Youth Association star Justin Jackson.

Jackson’s presence in the tournament brought North Carolina Coach Roy Williams to Nederland. It did some good as the Tar Heels landed the nation’s No. 2 small forward.

Jackson and the Warriors are back in the tournament this year that starts cranking up Thursday.

HCYA is 12-4 on the year and enters the tournament as the early favorite.

There are four pools participating in the Classic which will play amongst each.  Saturday the teams break away from the pools and compete against each other to determine the champion.

The home team Nederland Bulldogs are the highlight of Pool A. The Bulldogs are 4-4 on the year after Tuesday’s 58-39 loss to the Port Arthur Memorial Titans.

Nederland has a college commit of their own in Colton Weisbrod who had 24 points and 12 rebounds against the Titans.

The Bulldogs are joined by Alvin and Community Christian in Pool A. Nederland will take on Alvin at 6 p.m. Thursday and Community Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

HCYA enters the deepest set of teams in Pool B along with Silsbee and West Brook. West Brook gets first crack at HCYA at noon Thursday before the Bruins take on the Tigers at 4:30 p.m. the same day. Friday it will be the Tigers turn to face the Warriors at 3 p.m. Friday.

West Orange-Stark and Christian Life, out of the Houston area, figure to battle it out to become the winner of Pool C. The Port Neches-Groves Indians are also in Pool B.

The Mustangs and Indians face off at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and the Indians face Christian Life at noon Friday. WO-S and Christian Life square off at 6 p.m. Friday.

Memorial is in the final group in Pool D along with Lumberton and Victory Prep.

Memorial plays in the tournament’s first game at 10:30 a.m. Thursday against the Raiders. Lumberton will face Victory Prep at 3 p.m. Thursday and Memorial faces Victory Prep at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The tournament championship will be decided at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The third place game is set for 6 p.m.

A first place team will be awarded out of the Silver Bracket at 4:30 p.m.
