AUSTIN — Bailey ties for 6th in state tourney
AUSTIN — PN-G junior Braden Bailey added a 75 to his opening 74 at the University of Texas Golf Club Tuesday and moved up three places to finish T6 at 149 in the 4A state high school golf championship.
Bailey, who tied for 7th as a sophomore, had two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. He looked to be in great shape after making a birdie on his 10th hole to get to even par, but a three-putt bogey and a four-putt double bogey derailed on coming down the stretch.
“I hit it a little better today than I did Monday, but it still wasn’t great,” Bailey said. “I putted pretty good. I think I made three putts outside 10 feet. The four-putt hurt. I was about 50 feet straight downhill, left it about 5 feet short, lipped out, then missed a 4 footer coming back up the hill.”
Highland Park’s Scottie Scheffler successful defended his championship. Scheffler won by six strokes, after following his first-day 66 with a one-over par 72 for a 138. William Martinez of Austin Vandergrift was the runner-up with a 144 (73-71). Cooper Dossey of Vandergrift and Hayden Springer of Northwest Nelson tied for third at 145.
Vandergrift, playing on its home course, prevented Highland Park from repeating as the team champion. The Austin school shot 293 on Tuesday to finish at 584. Highland Park was 17 shots back at 601 with Cedar Park third at 614.
