Coleman talking points: WO-Stark, Beaumont Central jump into rankings

(Continued)

PORT ARTHUR — Another Nederland player made an impressive debut on Saturday for Lamar. Former Bulldog defensive end Koby Couron made his first three collegiate tackles, including one for a loss, in the 75-0 whitewashing of Oklahoma Panhandle State. Couron has been running in the top two depth chart spots for much of the fall and should be a fixture in the defensive line rotation.

Lastly, another true freshman shined on Saturday. Newly minted cornerback Alex Sezer started Texas A&M’s game against Rice while Deshazor Everett was suspended for a half. Sezer made the most of his time in the lineup, totaling four tackles and breaking up a pass. The former LC-M runner graduated early to enroll at A&M and his decision to play there in the spring seems to have paid off.

3) SportsCenter play of the day

When I talked about the best finishes around the state yesterday, I missed a big one that already had plenty of national notoriety. Blame it on my head being in a spreadsheet instead of on a TV.

But, reader Vic Lege jogged my recollections of seeing this great clip on YouTube and on SportsCenter this weekend. See, Copperas Cove and A&M Consolidated were playing a game, with Cove leading Consol  41-37 in the closing minutes of Week Zero.

That’s when a play developed straight out of the Cal playbook, without random Stanford band members wandering on the field. Cove squib kicked it to Consol, who picked it up and somehow managed to weave through the bodies of players running at them.

One of the Consol players lateraled to a teammate, who took off for one of the sidelines, trying to turn the corner. When that was unsuccessful, he lateraled to another teammate, who ran the other way, before lateraling to another teammate.

This last one turned the corner on the opposite side of the field and raced down the sideline to give Consol  44-41 victory over Cove. The play easily covered 250 yards and was definitely worthy of national notoriety. Check it out on YouTube if you haven’t seen it yet.
