Now the fun begins for the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks as they head to the post-season after collecting a school record 24 regular-season wins after topping Angelina College 90-76 on Saturday.
After clinching a first-round bye in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament earlier this month, the Seahawks put the punctuation mark on a record-setting season with its win over Angelina.
Coupled with a San Jacinto College loss to Jacksonville on Saturday, the Hawks claim a Region XIV South Zone co-Championship and yet another banner on the Parker Center wall.
Lamar State-PA, the No. 4 seed in the upcoming tournament, will play its first game in the quarterfinals at the University of Texas at Tyler on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Sophomore guard Tre Bennett scored 30 points against the Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon, peppering the bottom of the net with 3-pointers, hitting 4 of 7 attempts while also shooting 8 of 14 from the free throw line. His double-figure tally against Angelina puts Bennett at the top of the all-time single-season scoring list for the college, and also takes the title as the all-time leading conference scorer at Lamar State-Port Arthur. In addition, Bennett had six rebounds with five steals and six assists against the Runners.
Big man Anthony Allen scored 13 points for the Seahawks and added 11 more blocks to his regular-season total, further extending his lead on the national title in that statistical category. He also had 11 rebounds for his fifth triple-double of the season.
Jamal Shabazz, a sophomore forward, added 14 points with 10 rebounds, while sophomore D.J. Blanks hit for 11 points.
The full Region XIV Tournament schedule will be posted at the Lamar State College-Port Arthur athletics website, athletics.lamarpa.edu.
