PORT ARTHUR — There is a reason Friday night is special.

When the Indians from Port Neches-Groves meet the Bulldogs from Nederland, three cities are as close to being shut down as humanly possible.

Friday’s game will be No. 90 in the series. PN-G holds a 48-34-7 against Nederland.

Now it is time to dig deep into the numbers of this series to prove it is truly one of the most unique rivalries in Texas.

The annual PN-G/Nederland game started back in 1925 and it was the Bulldogs who won, 6-0.

The Indians did not have to wait long to get revenge, since the teams played twice a year from 1925 to 1930. PN-G won the second contest played in 1925, 13-7.

There were an amazing 14 straight shut outs posted from 1926 to 1934. PN-G won 10 of those games while Nederland blanked PN-G twice in the span. There were two 0-0 ties. In fact, there are four times in the rivalry when the game ended 0-0.

Mid County Madness has seen 35 shut outs in 89 games. PN-G has shutout Nederland 21 times while Nederland has held the Indians scoreless 10 times.

Points obviously have come at a premium throughout this game’s history.

PN-G averages 17.8 points a game while Nederland averages 13.3 points a game.

The Indians winning margin in the series came in large part thanks to a dominating stretch from the 1960s to the 1980s.

From 1965 to 1985, PN-G never lost to Nederland. The teams played to ties in 1966 and 1968 and the Indians won 15 in a row from 1969 to 1985.

Fans of the Bulldogs are well aware the lead in the series was one time much higher in the Indians favor. The deficit has been cut since the start of the new century.

Since 2000, Nederland is 10-3 against PN-G. Nederland’s longest winning streak against PN-G is four games, 1954-57. Going back to 1993 — Larry Neumann’s first season as Nederland coach — the Bulldogs are 14-6.

The Bulldogs are currently riding a three-game winning streak in the rivalry. It makes the fourth time Nederland has won three in a row, with all four streaks coming during the Neumann era.

PN-G rode a five-game winning streak from 1931 to 1935 and won four straight from 1989 to 1992. The Indians have not won more than two games in a row in the series since 1998 and 1999. The 1999 season ended with a trip to the state championship game for PN-G.

Nederland quickly congratulated PN-G on the state berth the following year with a 21-19 win against the Indians.

PN-G on Friday will look to end its current skid against Nederland. If the Indians win it will also end the Bulldogs 20-game District 20-4A winning streak.

Get ready Mid County, madness is coming soon.
