HUNTSVILLE — Nederland’s Felicia Sauceda missed by two shots Tuesday in her bid to earn a berth in the girls 4A state golf tournament.
Sauceda, a senior needing to finish in the top three among girls not on the three teams that qualified for state, added an closing 82 to an opening 78 for a 36-hole score of 160 in the Region 3 championships. Nicki Oesch of George Ranch claimed the third and final medal spot with a 158 (76-82).
Nederland placed seventh in the team competition with a score of 736 (371-365). The Lady Bulldogs were six strokes lower than on the first day, thanks to Shelbi Vincent improving from a 90 to an 84 (174) and Reagan Bodin going from a 111 to a 102 (213). Reid Whaley added a 97 to her opening 92 for a 189. Hallie Hefner’s 239 (124-115) didn’t count toward the team total.
Port Neches-Groves finished in 11th place at 829, after shooting 424 in the final round. Blaire Brevell shot 177 (89-88), Oxy Benites 199 (96-103), Raylie Guidry 225 (108-117) Kameryn Scott 228 (112-116). Kayla Williams’ 240 (122-118) did not count.
LC-M’s Lauren Cox and Lumberton’s Jesse Barton, playing in the medalist division, shot 164 (80-84) and 186 (93-93), respectively.
Montgomery, shooting a 306 Tuesday, won the team competition a 619. Huntsville 312-633 was second and Kingwood Park 315-649 placed third. Heather Shake of Dawson won the medalist medal with a 74-146. — Bob West
