Fort Bend Bush next Memorial playoff foe

PORT ARTHUR — A bellowing voice, whose owner was unseen, screamed out an important battle cry Friday night inside the Port Arthur Memorial locker room.

“Who do we play next?” the voice screamed. “It doesn’t matter who we play next.”

Well, the answer to that question has been answered. The Titans now face the 28-4 and No. 10 Fort Bend Bush Broncos.

The two teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barbers Hill High School, with a trip to the regional tournament on the line.

It took a lot of heart for the Titans (25-7) to reach this point after a thrilling victory Friday night over Clear Lake at Clear Creek High School.

For one, it was practically a Falcons home game. The crowd was loud and clearly one-sided for Clear Lake. Secondly, Memorial watched Clear Lake erase a large Titans lead in the fourth period to force overtime.

Most teams would cave in after watching the opponent drain a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to tie the game. Not Travis Williams’ Titans.

The Titans responded by doing their job in overtime and winning, 66-63, behind great free throw shooting.

Albert Jacobs was sensational from the line and as point guard in the extra period. His ball handling made sure the Titans did not turn the ball over and he was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Dorian Chatman continued to be a double-double machine with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Torian Lott fought off an apparent chest injury to score 15 points.

Bush defeated Pearland, 53-48, to advance to meet the Titans.
