Lady Cardinals host South Dakota in second round of WBI

BEAUMONT — BEAUMONT —The Lamar Lady Cardinals will be back in the familiar surroundings of the Montagne Center as they host South Dakota in the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Lamar is the No. 2 seed in the West Region of the tournament.

Lamar (22-10), which claimed a 70-48 first-round victory at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center on the campus of Lamar State College-Port Arthur on Wednesday, has won 39 consecutive non-conference home games. The first 38 of those at the Montagne Center before No. 39 came in Port Arthur.

“It will be nice to be back in our building,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “We’d love to see a great turnout to support us.”

South Dakota (18-15), a member of The Summit League, is the West Region’s sixth seed. The Coyotes claimed a 77-69 win at third-seeded Utah State on Thursday, led by Nicole Seekamp’s 33 points.

“They shoot the ball well and they have big, strong post players,” Tidwell said of the Coyotes. “They can score inside and outside.”

Kalis Loyd. Lamar’s all-time leading scorer, who missed the win over Presbyterian, is listed as “day-to-day” by Tidwell. Loyd has played in 126 career games, tying Trashanna Smith for the school record. Lamar senior Jasmin Henderson has played in 125 career games heading into Sunday’s contest.

“We had people step up against Presbyterian,” Tidwell said. “We’re going to need the same thing against South Dakota.”

Should Lamar win, the Lady Cardinals would host a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Saturday’s game between fourth-seeded Elon and eighth-seeded McNeese State. The championship game is scheduled for March 30 or March 31.

Tickets for Sunday’s game are $10 for adults and $5 for Lamar students. Tickets are available by calling (409) 880-1715. Sunday’s game will air live on KLVI (AM 560) and be simulcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.
