Lamar’s defense learned the difficulty of coping with real speed last Saturday.
Ray Woodard and Cardinals’ defenders gladly will welcome a slightly slower pace tonight at 7 o’clock when LU will entertain NAIA school Bacone College of Muskogee, Okla.
Rain or shine, and it’s much more likely rain, the Cardinals (1-2) will host the Warriors (2-1) on Provost Umphrey Stadium’s slick and most assuredly wet carpet.
Woodard is not rejoicing in the slightest over the 59-3 whipping administered by the 11th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys last Saturday.
“We got some positives from going up there and we will become a better team for playing them,” the LU boss said.
After a trip to Grambling and an open date, the Redbirds hope the goal is to improve enough for the Southland Conference opener at Sam Houston State on the afternoon of Oct. 12.
By permitting a whopping 59 points at OSU, Lamar has now allowed an average of 30.7 points a game.
“We had some opportunities to get off the field and we didn’t do it,” Woodard lamented.
Bacone of the Red River Athletic Conference has played NAIA-level schools until today. The Warriors won an overtime game Aug. 31 at McPherson, Kansas and lost to Northwestern Iowa on Sept. 7. They beat Southwestern (TX) of Georgetown last Saturday in Muskogee.
“It was a humbling experience but we came out here this week and prepared just as if we were playing Oklahoma State again,” said Lamar running back Kade Herrington who carried 20 times for 66 yards and impressed OSU defenders with his toughness.
Harrington has gained 206 total yards (154 rushing and 52 receiving) to lead the offense in three games while receiver Jordan Edwards is close behind with 200 receiving yards.
