PORT ARTHUR —
Brian English’s Nederland Bulldogs open their 2014 state playoff run on Tuesday at Hardin-Jefferson High School against District 19-4A runner-up Humble Summer Creek.
Tipoff for the bidistrict matchup is set for 7:30 p.m.
Nederland’s competition will be a Summer Creek club which enters the playoffs at 21-8 on the year and 12-4 in district action.
Pregame ticket sales at Nederland will be announced later this week.
Since the H-J facility doesn’t seat nearly as many as Nederland’s Dogdome, Bulldog and Southeast Texas fans probably should get in early to get a good seat.
This will be the Bulldogs sixth straight state playoff appearance under English. They finished the regular season Tuesday night with a 22-8 record.
Nederland was also 11-3 and runner-up in District 22-4A behind co-champs Beaumont Central and Ozen, each who finished at 12-2.
“They (Summer Creek) are very athletic and have a big kid (6-7), so it will be a good test for us,” noted English. “But we feel good about our team going into the playoffs. Especially since we’ve seen two great teams in Central and Ozen four times recently and with stayed with them each and every time.”
After taking over the Nederland program in the 2006-2007 season, the Bulldogs failed to make the playoffs in English’s first two seasons. But in five straight playoffs appearances since then, the ‘Dogs have gone 131-51, including making it to the regional semifinals once and regional quarterfinals three times.
One thing for sure, playing highly ranked Central and Ozen four times in district (winning one by four points, and losing three by a total of only eight points) should position the Bulldogs for anything they’ll go up against in the early stages of postseason play.
