District 20-4A boys basketball ready to rumble

Slowly but surely all the different area districts are opening up intra-league play. Next up? The District 20-4A boys, who kick off the 2012-2013 district season with games on Tuesday.

Nederland (10-5), which comes in with Beaumont Central as the favorites for the district title, will travel to Vidor to open 20-4A play. The Bulldogs are coming off two hard-fought victories over Port Arthur Memorial and Silsbee last week. Nederland is also trying to defend two straight district titles after it tied Central for the top spot last season.

Vidor (5-6) is 3-3 in its last six games, but hasn’t played an opponent higher than Class 3A all season. The Pirates beat Anahuac last Friday 66-31 but lost to both Hamshire-Fannett and Beaumont Legacy Christian in their two previous games.

Port Neches-Groves will open up its district schedule at home against Lumberton. The Indians struggled in non-district play, but also played a tough schedule, including two games against Silsbee, a trip to Hardin-Jefferson and three tough matchups each in the YMBL South Texas Shootout and Bulldog Classic.

The Indians (2-10) will play a Lumberton team that has had five- and seven-game losing streaks already this season, dropping six straight games in the Hardin-Jefferson Marathon and its first five of the season The Raiders have won two straight, beating Anahuac  52-38 last Tuesday and Evadale 73-51 on Friday.

The 20-4A girls will also be in action on Tuesday, picking up district play again. Nederland (1-1) will host Vidor after dropping a game to Central last Tuesday, 64-31, and beating Bridge City 43-39 on Friday in non-district play. With a victory tonight, the Lady Bulldogs can equal their district win total from a year ago, when they went 2-12.

PN-G (0-2) is still looking for its first district win in over two years. The Lady Indians went winless in district play last season and will play at Lumberton on Tuesday.

Both Port Arthur Memorial basketball teams are off on Tuesday, with both resuming district play on Friday.
