PORT ARTHUR — Lumberton’s Boogie really knew how to boogie at Iron Oaks. Preston “Boogie’’ Ricks, an 11-year-old sharpshooter, competed in the Southern Texas PGA’s Little Linksters 10-12-year-old division on Tuesday, knocking in a gap wedge for a hole in one on the 65-yard second hole. Ricks’ playing partner Faith Petrovich witnessed the “awesome” shot. Or at least it was awesome when it was described by Ricks to tournament officials afterwards. Preston needed 42 other strokes on the remaining holes, winning the nine-hole modified category... I counted seven boys in the junior division with 18-hole scores in the 70s on Monday at Henry Homberg Golf Club in Beaumont. Congratulations go to the Lumberton teenage tandem of Jeff Rountree in the 16-18 and Tyler Ford in the 13-15..... Major Rising was the grand champion on Monday in the seniors game at Belle Oaks. Rising collected five points while Joe Vanderweg and David Vorpol tied for second with four apiece. The closest to the hole heroes were Doc Brown at the 15th hole and Bill Taylor at the eighth hole.... Ten days from now — Saturday, July 13 — the Babe Zaharias Golf Course in Port Arthur will host the Nederland Heritage Festival flighted two-man scramble tournament. The golfers will tee off at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Entry fee is $20 per person but that amount does not include a green fee or payment for a golf cart. All of the $20 entry fee will go toward prizes for the players. To enter the tournament, call 722-8286.... Dennis Walsh, Buddy Carroll, Cecil Norris, and Charles Huckaby dominated the back side at 8 under in the Seniors 50 plus shootout. The two-ball format had two teams at -3 on the front side. They were the Walsh team along with the team of R.C. Russell, Larry Voight, Pete Reobroi and B Lewis... Last weekend’s Super Saturday winners at The Babe included three four-man teams. Two squads tied for the front nine honors at -3. They included Bill Hammond, Rick Pritchett, Mark Petry and Harold Wilkinson on one team and Jim Jordan, Gene Jones, Ron Theriot and Robert Calloway on the other. The back nine winners also stood at -3. That foursome contained Dwain Anderson, Ivory Hatch, Lee Bertrand, and Charles Leard. Two other groups shared second place on the back nine at -2. They were the team of Jim Jordan, Gene Jones, Ron Theriot and Robert Calloway and the team of Bret Yellot, Thad Borne, Gene Hardy, and Casey McBride.... Quite a competitive scramble unfolded last Thursday in the Senior Game at the Babe. Mark Petry, Dillard Darbonne, Rodney Guillory, and Malcolm Tiller were the winners at 15 under, followed by Bill Hanley, Charlie Huckaby, E.T. Robicheaux and Dwayne Morrison at 14 under. Two teams shared third place at 13 under. They were Raymond Darbonne, Ron Mistrot, Joe Benoit, and Orland Defrates on one team and Gerald Huebel, Bill Jones, Gary Wagner, Mike Hess and Ned Cole on the other.... An equally competitive dogfight was so tight last Wednesday that two four shared the top honors at 19. They contained Jeff Lane, Paul Allemand, Paul Duplantis and Bill Jones on one team and Craig Fontenot, Adam Noel, Bryan Grant, and Charlie Huckaby on another. The closest to the hole honorees from the dogfight were Earl Richard (No. 2), Craig Fontenot (No. 7), Adam Noel (No. 12), and Jim Jordan (No. 15)....
