Bulldogs get share of title; set to play Barbers Hill next week

NEDERLAND — Nederland 18, Beaumont Central 2

NEDERLAND — It was a special night for the Nederland Bulldogs Friday on senior night.

The Bulldogs celebrated a share of the District 20-4A championship after defeating Beaumont Central, 18-2. Nederland finished 20-4A with a 11-3 record, the same as the Vidor Pirates who downed Little Cypress-Mauriceville Friday.

The Bulldogs and Pirates flipped Friday for seeding and Nederland will represent 20-4A as the top team. Nederland will have a three-game series against Barbers Hill. Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Barbers Hill. Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Nederland and Game 3, if necessary, will be played next Saturday with a site and the time to be determined during Game 1 when the coaches meet to flip a coin.

Nederland (19-11) has now won 10 straight after starting 20-4A with a 1-3 record.

“Both us and Vidor earned the share of the title,” Nederland coach Cody Robbins said. “I am proud of our team considering we started 1-3. I am excited for our kids. We have started to play good baseball. We were always able to pitch but now we are getting hits and playing much better defense. it feels good to play that way right now before the playoffs. I hope it continues.”

Colton Broussard led the Nederland offense with three hits, two RBI and four runs. Colby Price was 3-for-4 with four runs while Brian Feltman was 2-for-2 with four RBI and a triple.

Braden Nevala finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs, Zach Friesz was 2-for-2 with a double and a run and Brett Smith was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Chase Kemp was 1-for-2 with two runs.

Smith got the start on the mound and went three innings. He gave up no runs and no hits while striking out six batters. He only walked one Jaguars hitter.
