It certainly was not the start to the first round Nederland coach Will Mallett had in mind for his Lady Bulldogs.
Nederland dropped Game 1 to Dayton, 6-4, as the Lady Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday with Game 3 to follow, if necessary.
Dayton starting pitcher Presley Bell threw a masterful game Friday at home. She hurled 6.2 innings and struck out 14 batters and gave up seven hits with three walks.
Nederland (19-9) pitchers only gave up two earned runs due to the Lady Bulldogs surrendering two errors.
Madyson Guidry was on the mound for 3.1 innings for Nederland and allowed five hits and three walks to go with three strike outs. Guidry gave up five runs but only one was earned. Tori Cooper finished the game and gave up one earned run in 2.2 innings to go with five hits and one walk.
Cooper was the star of the Nederland offense with a two-run homer in the top of the third as the Lady Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead.
Dayton scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and then took the lead for good in the fourth with three runs.
Nederland’s Brixie Gallier was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run while teammate Taylor Davis was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Cooper scored again in the top of the fifth off a Dayton error. She led the inning by reaching first on a Lady Broncos throwing error.
Davis scored the Lady Bulldogs final run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 5-4.
Dayton answered with a RBI double off the bat of Alicia Davila to take a 6-4 lead into the seventh.
Nederland had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh but Dayton got Davis to ground out to first for the final out.
