Area baseball/softball roundup for April 19, 2013

Nederland wins, gets district title

BEAUMONT — The Nederland baseball team got a nice surprise late against Beaumont Ozen. In addition to scoring two runs late to key at 3-1 victory over the Panthers, Nederland also found out that Port Neches-Groves lost to Vidor.

That loss coupled with the win over Ozen gives Nederland the District 20-4A title outright, as the Bulldogs are now three games up on PN-G with two games to play.

The Bulldogs entered the top of the sixth tied 1-1, but quickly scored a pair of runs. Leadoff hitter Aaron Sampere singled to left field before giving way to courtesy runner Colton Broussard.

Broussard stole second after a foul popup to the catcher and then scored when Brandon Self lined a double to right field. The next two batters walked and Self scored the final run of the game on a passed ball.

Those runs gave starting pitcher Gabe Nevala the victory. Nevala threw 5 innings while allowing five hits and one unearned run while walking none and striking out eight. Sam Smith and Beau Stewart each threw a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.

Nederland (21-3, 11-1) will host Lumberton on Senior Night at 5 p.m. Monday.

Memorial loses in Baytown

BAYTOWN — The Port Arthur Memorial baseball team lost 7-1 to Baytown Sterling Friday in District 21-5A play.

Starting pitcher Robert Howard allowed five runs on five hits in 4 innings of work while striking out two. Teammate Ramiro Sanchez was 1 for 3 with a double while Gama Martinez was 1 for 4.

Memorial (11-12, 3-7) will host Beaumont West Brook at 5 p.m. Monday.

Softball teams still waiting

The Port Neches-Groves and Nederland softball teams are still waiting on their bidistrict opponents from 19-4A. New Caney, which had the second seed heading into Friday night, lost to the state’s No. 1 team Barbers Hill.

That means New Caney and Crosby finished in a tie for second place. The two will play a tiebreaker game at 6 p.m. Monday at Humble Summer Creek. The winner would play Nederland in bidistrict while the loser of that game faces PN-G.

Teams must have their district certifications in by Tuesday.
