Patience is a virtue, especially on the baseball diamond. Nederland’s hitters displayed enough patience to draw nine walks in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 12-1, 5-inning victory over Beaumont Central at Metreyeon Delahoussaye Field Friday in District 20-4A play.
Nederland scored eight runs on three hits off three Central pitchers in the bottom of the first, sending 14 men to the plate and stealing five bases. Nederland head coach Cody Robbins said his hitters patience paid off to start the game.
“Some times, this is a tough night to hit when pitchers are all over the zone,” Robbins said. “We told our guys to stay within themselves. We only had six hits but we scored 12 runs. We got some hits with runners in scoring position. We also played good defense. It was nice to play again. It’s been a week since we played, so it was nice to get a win.”
After Central’s Ja’Michael Simien drove in a run in the top of the first with an RBI double to right center, things got interesting in the bottom of the inning.
Senior center fielder Seth Barrow opened the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. Barrow promplty stole second base before two-hole hitter Gabe Nevala walked. The two then combined on a double steal of second and third, respectively, before Aaron Sampere loaded the bases with another walk.
Three more Nederland batters would be walked consecutively, driving in the first three runs of the game. At that point, Central starter Geary Sineguar gave way to reliever Drake Simien with no outs in the game.
Simien coaxed an infield fly to second base out of Nederland third baseman Jared Ramoin. Shortstop Brandon Self plated two more runs with an RBI single to left.
Simien picked up another out when catcher Brian Feltman was tagged out trying to score from third on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman Michael Shaw plated another run with an RBI single on the infield. Simien then walked the next four batters before being lifted for reliever Brenden Allison.
Allison ended the inning by getting Mitchell Sanderson to fly out to right field. By that point, Nederland had erased a 1-0 Central lead and led 8-1 heading into the top of the second.
“We told our guys not to swing anything above their hands or chase bad pitches,” Robbins said. “We told them they had to stay disciplined and not create bad habits. Especially when you play (Saturday), that could still be in your muscle memory and you could swing at a bad pitch. We told them to stay disciplined at the plate and get a good pitch to hit.”
Nederland sent 10 men to the plate again in the bottom of the third. Allison loaded the bases with no outs by hitting leadoff man Shaw, walking Barrow and hitting Nevala.
The Central pitcher did get a strikeout for the inning’s first out, but the next batter, Jordan Wood, hit a scorching ground ball up the third base line. The ball hit the third base bag and popped up in the air, landing in short left field.
That allowed Shaw to score from third, making it 9-1 Nederland. After another strikeout, pinch hitter Cody Credeur was hit by a pitch, driving in a run and making it 10-1.
Pinch hitter Tyler Spell scored the game’s final runs with his own RBI single to left field that plated Nevala and Wood.
Nederland’s pitching staff was excellent all game. Nevala got the start and allowed two hits and one run in 2 innings of work while walking none and striking out five. Reliever Korey Clark threw two perfect frames while striking out five of his own while Sam Smith ended the game with a perfect fifth, striking out two.
“We pitched well tonight,” Robbins said. “We’ve got our whole pitching staff available (Saturday), even the guys who pitched tonight.”
