Lady Indians soccer moves on; Ned boys postponed

HUMBLE — Coach Aimee Bates’ Port Neches-Groves girls are headed to the 4A state sectional soccer playoff round.

The Lady Indians eliminated Willis, 3-0, late Friday night after a two-hour-plus rain delay.

PN-G, tri-champions of District 38-4A, scored once in the first half and then got two-second half goals. Friday night’s second half did not start until 9:40 p.m., the match originally started at 6 p.m.

Junior Hannah Higgins got the scoring action going six minutes into the match with a left-footed shot to the far post off a pass from junior Alyssa Talbot.

Then the rains came and the Lady Indians headed to a nearby mall during the delay. The break in action did not phase these Lady Indians.

Junior Hannah Gerald scored to make it 2-0 in the second half off an assist from Higgins. Gerald’s shot found the net inside the far post.

Sophomore Mikayla Johnson finished off Willis’ season with an outside shot making it 3-0.

“We controlled the match,” Bates said. “We played excellent defense. It was a crazy night.”

PN-G moved on to face either Magnolia or Jasper next Thursday or Friday.

Nederland boys soccer postponed

The Nederland boys soccer team will have to wait until noon today to start its playoff run.

The Bulldogs, champions of District 38-4A, was set to face Waller Friday night but severe weather forced the postponement.

Nederland and Waller will square off at Turner Stadium in Humble.
