Vidor looks to stay unbeaten against Bridge City

VIDOR — VIDOR — The Vidor Pirates will be seeking there second straight win to open the season when they tangle with a young but gritty Bridge City Cardinal team this Friday night at Pirate Stadium.

  The Pirates (1-0) are coming off a tight 28-19 road victory at Santa Fe while the Cardinals (0-1) will look to bounce back after battling Class 2A No. 1-ranked Newton hard before falling 44-20.

  There’s no question about it, the Pirates showcased running back Sage Smith against Santa Fe.

  Smith rumbled through the Santa Fe secondary at will as he finished with 251 yards while scoring all four Vidor touchdowns. He scored on two big runs that covered 49 and 73 yards.

  First-year starting quarterback Geth Simmons ran the offense well. At least seven procedure penalties did bog down the Pirates at times.

  The Cardinals held their own against the high-flying speedy Eagles, drawing as close as 18-14 before Newton was able to pull away.

  Bridge City quarterback Chase Shugart had a nice debut, completing 13-of-28 passes for 173 yards. His favorite two targets were Keaton Langston, who had four catches for 59 yards and Malcolm Busby, who hauled in three receptions for 69 yards.

  Newton running back Kevin Shorter ran for 122 yards and two scored on 10 carries and caught four passes for 69 yards. Newton quarterback Roney Elam completed 7-of-14 passes for 203 yards.

  The Pirates notched a 45-7 win against the Cardinals in Bridge City last season.

  The Pirates had 470 total yards, all of it coming on the ground while their defense limited Bridge City to 143 yards.

  Montna Quirante rushed for 249 yards and three TDs in the victory.

  The Pirates will play host to Clear Brook next week while the Cardinals welcome in Beaumont Kelly.
